Would anyone have any suggestions as to the best removable front mudguard. I will be relocating to a different workplace in the near future and commuting by bike each days (28km round trip). With the wetter weather and winter nearly upon us I need front protection. I already have a rear mudguard. Its not that I would like the easier removable option with the clip on ones. Its just that I have hear so many negative feedback storys of the SKS raceblades and other similar guards with rubbing off the wheel, falling apart, rattling etc.

I use a BBB one that attaches to the brake block and have had no issues.

Many bikes don't have adequate clearance between the rear of the front wheel and the down tube to fit those.

SKS raceblade works fine on my rear wheel, not a hope of fitting it on the front wheel. Cube Attempt owner. I agree , don't go near them .

A LBS that I won't be going back to fitted those to my bike. In order to fit the attachement part behind the 105 brake calliper on the front wheel they didn't put the wheel fully into the dropout so to leave clearance between the wheel and the calliper.

I found this out when I took the wheel off to clean it and when I put it back on it was rubbing off that mudguard attachment. needless to say I was not happy that I was potentially riding a death trap!

Surely it's unsafe to not have the wheel fully seated into the dropouts?!?

Thanks for the feedback folks so the bottom line is there is no real solution as for proper fitting mudguards for a road bike with narrow clearance and no eyelets?

As usual, there's no right answer - it depends on your bike and tyre size (and brand). I use Raceblade Longs on my Giant Defy with no clearance issues using Continenental GP4000S 25mm. I can get away with the same on my Canyon Ultimate Al SLX using 23mm GP4000S but not 25mm. I can use GP 4Seasons in 25mm with the Raceblades on the Canyon as they size differently. Once fitted, I've had no issues with Raceblade Longs and find them really handy for fitting/removing.

If you have clearance issues with your current setup you could try these: http://www.topeak.com/products/fenders/defender_rc1rc11
