Humax 1010s

    Hi.

I really should have posted here before I purchased the above box but here goes.

I'm currently with UPC but I've requested to cancel my contract as I'm moving in a couple of weeks to an area that has no UPC service. I was told Humax was the best box out there so without any researching into it extensively, I just went and ordered a refurbished model off the Humax website and got it delivered to a friend of mine in the UK. (I'll be collecting it in a fortnights time). I had planned to get in someone to install the necessary dishes/ariels/equipment when I had moved into my new home.

In an ideal world, I'd want to be able to use one remote - a 7 day EPG for both Irish and UK channels, basically I want something that offers an easy and convienent to use experience- Basically just how the Sky/UPC interface works.

However the more I look into the Humax 1010s, my understanding is that it doesn't quite fit the bill of what I'd want?

I'm now thinking I have made a mistake in purchasing it as it doesn't offer the EPG for the Irish channels - I'm now thinking that I ought to return the Humax box and get myself a Walker WP645TS-HD instead as it seems to fit the bill of what I'm looking for.

Can someone offer any assurance and say that the Humax 1010s is capable of doing what I want it to do? Or would I need two remotes? If so, I think that'll make my mind up and I'll just arrange to return the box.

The Humax is a FreeSat box that will show the FTA satellite channels using a dish but none of the Irish ones. You will need an aerial and either a second terrestrial box, a combo box or simply rely on the TV for Saorview (Irish channels)

    Thanks Gerry.

Sounds like I would need a second remote for that. How much of a pain is it to use two remotes each time you want to flick through the channels? Or is it something you become used to?

Am I correct when I understand that the Walker combo box is the only one on the market that offers a 7 day EPG for both the Irish & UK channels?

As well as the two remotes for the boxes, you will also need to switch sources on the TV. The walker is aimed specifically at the Irish market but has less than glowing reviews from users on the terrestrial forum. There are several "combo" boxes available that combine terrestrial (Saorview) and satellite in one box. Basic ones such as a Ferguson will only give now/next EPG for sat. You can get several linux based boxes such as the Amiko Alien 2 or Edision OS3. These are very powerful and flexible boxes which have full 7day EPG, series linking, record one while watching another, live pause. network streaming etc etc. You can arrange the channels in any order/combinations you wish. However there is a steep learning curve in setting them up. That said it IS well worth the effort in the end and you will get plenty of support here on Boards.
