I renewed my insurance in August for the year. The cost of it had gone up substantially from last year. I have since got 3 penalty points for doing 57 in a 50. Contacted the insurance company and they are saying that there is now €198 euro to be paid for this. this sounds mad and excessive. have friends with 4 points and had no loading on theres. What are my options here. can you cancel your current policy and look for fresh quotes elswhere. really dont know what to do.

You can cancel if you want but I suggest you get quotes first because it might not work out cheaper. Don't forget to factor in the cost of cancelling early, as some insurers may not refund optional policy extras and most will charge an admin fee. Read your policy terms.

I had 6 points at one stage and it didn't cost me any more on my insurance.
This year my insurance came down, though only €15.

When doing quotes online, do it without adding the points, then see the quote, then modify it to add your points and you're likely to see no changes.

    Are you with Aviva?

They are the only company that Ive come across that penalise drivers for less than 6 PP's.

Some companies give a discount for zero penalty points, you may have lost that and that's why the premium has gone up.

That's the reason I didn't go with them when I was renewing this summer.
Their quote was the cheapest, but included 33% discount for no penalty points.
If I get any penalty points, then premium would go sky high, so I decided to pay tiny bit more with Allianz, but have more piece of mind.
