Tricky situation applying for an internal role

Hi all - really keen to hear your opinions on this.

I am working with a large Oil and Gas company for the last 3.5 years and a maternity cover role has come up in another department that I am keen to go for. For internal applications the protocol is that you inform your line manager that you intend to apply and then submit your application.

The problem is that due to the low oil price, the company is tightening up its costs and to reduce headcount when people leave they are not being replaced. So if I was offered the maternity cover role my manager is definitely going to lose a position in their team at a time when we're already a bit stretched to cover our workload.

It's a bit of a long shot to get the position and its very likely I won't get it and will be back in my current team. But it's a position I would love to do and don't want to pass up the opportunity. Does anyone have advice on how I can approach this with my line manager and get her support for my decision? Or at least reduce any negative reactions in case I end up back in my current team. I'm especially keen to hear the opinion of any managers/team leaders.
