Work Experience in HR

    Hi Everyone,

I recently completed a CIPD Diploma in Human Resource Management and I'm also working full time. I'm trying to make the move into HR but I'm finding it hard because I don't have tons of HR working experience.

Does anyone know of a company that would be willing to allow someone to work weekends / evenings to gain work experience in HR?

I know its asking a lot but because I work full time its difficult to do it at any other time during the week.

    Thanks in advance.

Is there any chance of moving into an HR role in your current company?

Unfortunately not. The company i'm in at the moment doesn't have a HR department. Most of this work is covered by each departments line manager. Although I have taken on extra responsibilities (e.g. training, interviewing, creating new training documents), this experience still doesn't seem to be enough to get me to interview stage.

TBH I've never come across a HR department that worked anything other than M-F 9-5, I suspect you'll struggle to find somewhere out of those hours that you can get experience.

It doesn't help that most of that isn't considered HR!

    Nor have I.

Op, your best option is an internship. Doesn't help you're not entitled to job bridge and competing with hundreds of people looking for experience in HR who did similar courses, including some at degree level. But job bridge is bureaucratic and the quality of candidates can be poor, so you would still have a good chance of getting experience if you were able to do a completely unpaid internship on your own steam for up to 6 months.

Another option is to get into a growing company with 20+ staff and take over the ad-hoc HR function, but also be able to act as a PA and perform other admin functions. Starting part-time could take the financial sting out of it for smaller companies who may have a genuine interest in putting watertight HR policies in place. Once you have experience there would be no need to specify on your cv that the job was part-time or not purely HR, and you would have a lot of achievements to draw from.
