That time of the year again.

If you've been thinking of joining a Club and want to try out a group spin then now is the time.

The first of our mentored Intro/Beginner spins will take place next Sunday, the 27th of September at 9.30 AM. The meeting point is the entrance to the Parkvale Estate.

    See our website for directions.

    http://www.sttiernanscc.com/leisure-cycling/club-spins/

This will be a guided spin with a designated leader and other experienced club members along to offer instruction on group riding.

We ask that all prospective members (regardless of fitness levels) attend these spins before progressing on to our other group spins held on a Saturday.

As a mentored spin the pace will be controlled and no rider will be left behind. We will regroup at designated points along the route.

However you should be self-sufficient so please bring a mobile phone, spare tubes, tyre levers, a pump and appropriate rain gear if the weather looks iffy. Helmets and Drop Bar Bikes are compulsory. Some money for coffee and a bun is also a good idea.

All riders are welcome to try up to three club spins before joining.

If you are going to come along please email us in advance so we know you are coming. info@sttiernanscc.com

If you can't make it we plan to hold mentored spins every Sunday AM for the next few months.

If you have any queries feel free to post them here or send me a PM

See you on a spin soon!

We've a few but nothing particularly organised. 3 or 4 of us will be at the Fixx Race on Sunday.

Highly recommended - a nicer bunch of people you will not meet.

Daragh - I wonder if the club has ever considered intermediate level spins? Just looking at the Facebook response to last Saturday's club spin the pace was fairly hectic for someone who does not consider themselves as a racer but might be beyond the beginner stage. Just a thought.

    Keep up the good work.

I think last week would not be typical. There were several people from the club at the Morgan Sparrow Memorial sportive. Typically there will be two groups on Saturdays that will have two levels catered for, intermediate and faster.

As Daragh points out though, if this is an introduction to group riding it is recommended to do a few of the Sunday spins before switching to either spin on Saturdays.

    Cheers Fireball XL5!

Last week wasn't really a reflection of how spins normally run.

Like most clubs in the off season we try and have two groups on Saturday. Racers and Inters/Sportive. This generally caters to all tastes (and people often switch between them depending on what their goals are).

The purpose of the Sunday group is to bring new (and returning) cyclists up to the Intermediate level over the Autumn and Winter, giving them group riding skills, general road experience etc. This is intended to avoid a baptism of fire with off-season racers in winter warrior mode which often puts people off. :D

    Thanks Daragh,

A lad I know is interested in both CX and joining a club.

    See you at the Fixx!

The one and only Robin Seymour is doing this already for Orwell and would presumably do it for St. Tiernan's also.

What sort of distance would these spins be covering?

Intro Spins start off short enough - 50-60k and increasing gradually over Autumn/Winter.

Good question - what's the usual distance and avg speed?

I am trying to convince my wife to join the club, she's comfortable riding 30-50km at the moment with average 24-26kph on flatish routes... The longest she cycled was 60km, but then she did it 28kph and wasn't too tired, so I think she can definitely do more :)

Do you have beginner's or ladies group?

If she can do that distance and speed she will have zero problems.

@Alek. She'll be more than comfortable (and very welcome) on our Intro/Beginner Spins - see upthread for details.

Thanks - I'll send her a link to this thread :)

It would have to be the next spin however due to Grange Castle CX race this Sunday and someone has to stay with kids :D Next weekend is for her - is there a beginner spin planned for Sunday 4th Oct?

Which part of Dublin/Co.Dublin do you cover as a club. I'm in South Co. Dublin and was kind of thinking of joining a club yet not sure about benefits of being a member.

We've got members from all over South County Dublin. You are welcome on 3 spins before joining to see if group cycling and the club thing is for you.

Also check out Orwell Wheelers who I hear are very nice :D
