I was reading a post about silly things done at work
one was about a name mispelling
and then it was just a black box that said " spoiler"
    thanks.

Its the hiding of something that is going to happen.
Take a look at the soaps in the TV forum. Loads of examples.

They are used mainly in the film,tv and sport forums as a way of hiding major plots/twists and results in sports. To unspoil you need to left click your mouse and drag it across the grey/black box. It is generally considered on forums that you do so at your own risk. I.e if you read a spoiler to the end of a film you wanted to watch it's your own fault.

You use the spoiler tags if you want to hide what you are posting. Anyone who wishes to read it then has to click on and/or scroll through the blanked out message.

They are often used to avoid posters inadvertently stumbling across something they may not yet wish to see, as they may be watching a recording/replay of something on TV later on. It could be a storyline in a Soap or a sports event/result. Often posters will post about the event openly in a thread, but put an alert in the thread title that the thread does include spoiler information.

Hence if you don't want to know about what's happened, don't click on the spoiler.

Closing since this is both answered, and unrelated to boards.ie
