My great-uncle who is a retired guitarist tells me I should use a slide to play a guitar? Is it any easier than fingering?

Hi, depends really on what you want to play. Slide guitar sounds great playing blues etc but is very limited in this respect. I've never heard of a slide only player either. There may be pedal steel players who may only play slide, but I've never heard of any "regular" guitarists who do this. I'd suggest learning some basic chords, how to strum with a plectrum, a dozen or so songs and maybe a bit of fingerpicking.......then decide which way to specialize.
