The 2000g tank with recessed wheels would easier pull and smoother on the road.

    abbey 2000 gallon recessed wheels

or hi spec spotless 1600 gallon. russain wheels

both similarly priced. no fierce draw to be done and 125hp 6 cylinder massey in front. could the abbey be half worn out?

The abbey seems good value, thought it be sold by now.

I'll keep going to my contractors 2500 gallon trailing shoe and 3500 gallon splash plate !!!

All things being equal the abbey is a better tank. Wider tyres and bigger capacity which your tractor will be easily able for. But the hi spec at just one euro is probably better value😜

    2 more questions

    a. in general which is seen as the better brand Abbey or Hi Spec ( I know other brands may be better again but just between these two)

    b. when you mean easier to pull do ye mean that its easier to pull in the field as less sinking due to the bigger wheels or that it is easier pulled on the rd e.g. going up a hill on a road?

Both tanks are well made, which is better is a matter of opinion.
On good ground the tyres will be largely irrelevant, but on marginal ground assuming there is enough of tread on them, the bigger tyres will prevent the tank from sinking down too much into the earth thereby making it easier to pull. In my experience it doesn't make any difference on an uphill road, all you need is enough power.

Tankers with recessed wheels can be less stable on hilly or sloped ground in comparison to the normal wheels.

be wary with the abbey tank,
They had a habit of making a tank and cutting out the recess and not accounting for this in the calculations, the 2000 gallon tank might be nearer 1800 gallon.
I heard about a contractor who bought a 2300 gallon abbey which turned out to be around 2000 gallon after the recesses were taken out but it was sold as a 2300

Does an old hi spec 1600 gallon on rear tractor wheels sound dear at €3500? I say it's one of the first models.

Conor eng actually advertise this fact in their brochure. Recess size varies with wheel size so just sell it as as a full tank, ie tank will hold less than stated.

A contractor told me that as a rule hi-spec hold more than abbey and he has both makes supposedly the same size. That aside we have a 3000 hi-spec gallon tandem axle tank with 600 wide tyres(I think) and we are considering buying a second tank and it probably will be a 2500gallon recessed tank for early season spreading as less ground damage and to speed up the busy times(after silage etc) Recessed wheel one for me.
