Apologies for the general question but hoping you can help? I've seen two Ford Focus 1.4 one a Zetec 1.4i the other regular 1.4. both are taxed the same.
I know the Zetec has some extras but would it not be a more powerful engine as well?
In the market for a cheapish runaround under the 1.4 bracket hence the questions.

I think there is just one engine, not 100% sure, though.

    No they're the same thing.

Isnt there an 8 valve and a 16 valve? I had the 16 valve.

Nope. Just 75bhp on the mk1 and 80bhp on the mk2
Petrol focus had Zetec 16v engine as standard

OP, if you want a cheap runabout, don't get the 1.4 focus. They drink petrol! The 1.6 Focus is cheaper the run.

Thanks Ian, the reason I was looking at the 1.4 was to keep road tax down but only looking at a 3 door as I had a 04 saloon Focus & found it very heavy on juice. Not sure is there much difference in the weight of the 3 door compared to the 4 door versions

The 1.4 and 1.6 are both trying to pull the same chassis; so the 1.6 will have an easier time of it simply because it's got more power - consuming less fuel into the process, particularly if you're doing any motorway driving.

There is less than €150 difference in motor tax between 1.4 litre and 1.6 litre. That works out at less than €3 extra per week.

If you are happy with the three door would you consider a fiesta instead? I have a 1.2 l and a full tank lasts for ages.

I would be Redser87 but the better half has a say as well & is not too keen on the Fiesta (don't know why)
As mentioned it'll be a run around second car so I'm not fussed as long as the running costs are relatively low.
Main car is diesel & tax is €200 for the year so find it frustrating to pay a level of tax much higher.
I've my eye on the Bangeromics thread to see if anything crops up in my range.

From having owned both I disagree. In my experience the 1.6 is harder on fuel.

Out of interest what kind of mpg were you seeing from each of them?
