Copping out or copping on - when do you not run ??

Interested to hear views on this. By way of background, I registered for the Dublin half marathon tomorrow simply to get an idea of where I stood in relation to DCM. I've had a virus since last weekend - absolutely wiped out most of the week although functioning. Tried to run on Monday but pulled the plug less than a mile in & trudged home. Managed 5 miles on Wed but had nothing in the tank & legs were sore (muscular type pains). I have two choices tomorrow - go ahead & do the half knowing my time won't be great & I won't learn anything from it, might end up wiped for longer or cut my losses & hope to get a better week's training next week as a result. Very much veering towards option 2 at the moment - is this copping out or copping on ???

I will make up my own mind in the end but interested to hear what others do if in this situation

It's always a bit of a sickener when that happens but it's (in my experience) almost always the best option to skip the race. It's only one race and DCM is your main goal. If you did decide to run it, you'll probably be unhappy with your time AND it'll probably take way more out of you than it should.

I didn't know you were going for DCM kit. If a virus I would go for option 2 as if you race it you could knock yourself right back. I had one 2 weeks before a ski trip last year and was still wrecked from it. Rest and get back to training when strong and well.

From experience don't do it, you may end up in a worse state. Not worth the risk.

Thanks for the responses - kinda knew the score anyway but a small part of me was thinking I might be wimping out :o Would have chanced it before but Mr Slow's experience stuck with me.

Not worth it kit3, let yourself recover properly before racing.

Don't do race and rest until you are strong enough to train properly, depending on your virus that could be another week or more. Viruses are not to be messed with, you could end up with a serious lay off. I lost almost a year twice in my 20 s due to training trough viruses (chicken pox and some form of glandular fever )that was extreme but the principle is the same, a few days off now could save you a lot of misery.

That was fairly extreme - must have been very frustrating for you.
