Thanks. I would if I had any. Considering Amazon sellers will post any book to PM in Newtownabbey for £2.80 its a Royal rip off.

Royal mail from uk to Ireland is about 30% more expensive than an post from Ireland to uk
    So no ripoff on it.

Book is obviously over 25mm thick and over 500g.

Would it not have been good to check rates before listing?

I've given up getting books posted directly to the ROI so all my stuff goes to PM in the North. All sellers on Amazon offer a standard £2.80 economy post so I can't compare postal rates. If internal UK post can be £2.80 why can't we have something close to that.? The book was 10 mm thick and less than 500 grammes.Just sayin'

That sounds like its a 'packet'.

I think the post office made a mistake unless you went for tracked.

    http://postage.anpost.ie/rates.asp?country=GB-MCT&cname=Great%20Britain&rname=Main%20cities/towns&zone=2&item_type=Packet&weight=0.5&service=IP

It should have been €5.90 for a >500g packet.

Royal mail are subsidising NI post and PM are taking advantage of that. I expect some items are delivered at a loss. This is why many couriers would have far different pricing for NI vs mainland UK. SImilarly an post or the ESB might be making loses delivering mail or power to very remote areas in Ireland.

I expect royal mail would prefer if they could just ban PM.

If over 500g it is 8.40, so I expect with packaging it was over 500g, the OP just said the book was less than 500g.

You'd want to keep in mind that if using PM for sellers and parcel gets list etc the az claim won't cover you

I buy second hand books off Amazon for as low as one penny so insurance is not an issue.
I'd like to sell on Amazon but on a £20 book they will take about £5 for selling. The 8.40 euro postage then becomes a deal breaker. As for RM subsidizing postage to NI that's a new one on me but I'm happy to use it.
I could use PM to send to the UK but its a whopping 14.50 even for a small packet.
