Wooden Shed Maintenence

I am in my house for 3 years now. There are 2 wooden sheds (or log cabins) out the back. I'm just wondering how best to maintain these? Should they be weather-proofed every couple of years? If so what would you use?

The most exposed parts are beginning to flake a bit. I would like to do something before winter to ensure that they don't get damaged any further. I'll take pic tomorrow and put it up for you to take a look?
