Im looking at 2 cars...same price same year... a focus 1.6 diesel 160,000km and mazda 3 1.4 petrol 100,000km.... whats the better option? Im leaning twards the focus but i feel like the mileage is a little high.

    Do you actually need diesel?

Both the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus come in 1.4 pertrol and 1.6 diesel.

The petrol option in either case will be less complicated and less risky, cheaper to tax, but less economical.

I drive 100km a day so would prefer the more economical. Why would you say the petrol is less complicated?

As in the diesel will have direct injection, turbo, intercooler, dual mass Flywheel etc etc _ all of which are expensive if they go wrong (which wouldn't be uncommon) The petrol doesn't have these bits.

The Mazda will be way more reliable or those two.

I'd be looking at a Hyundai i30 or Kia Ceed in petrol or diesel over those two.

Mainly because it's petrol, but Ford's always get tired and worn out looking with age, and have a shorter lifespan than Mazdas.
They're not bad though in general. Some of their older petrol engines (that aren't bought from other manufacturers) are poor though.

The Mazda 3 is the same as a ford focus underneath though. That petrol engine is a Mazda unit though but both cars share that 1.6 hdi engine. Not sure I'd agree that Mazda's last longer either. Mazda's have extremely bad rust protection and must be one of the worst modern cars for rust. A mate of mine has a 2009 Mazda 3 and even that is getting very rusty underneath at this stage.

Fords may not have the greatest rust protection either but they are much better than Mazda in this regard in my experience.

The Mazda 3 is also no better than a ford focus on the interior so both wear about the same in that regard.
