Brake and gear cable replacement

    Hi,

Thinking of getting the brake and gear cable replaced, bit of fraying going on and despite successful efforts in the past to index, can't seem to index them in the shifting down direction as crisply as they shift up. I was going to do it myself but don't think it's worth the investment in a decent cable cutters and cable.

In talking to the LBS, should I specify what brand or quality of cable I want to replace or does it actually matter?

    cheers
    Jon

would imagine at most shops it will make no difference, they will use whatever boxes of bulk cable they have.

I'd go for a good set of jag wire cables, cyclesuper if your in Dublin is a good spot and I'd replace inner and outer, the way I look at it if your doing it do it right, I think all shops fit the bulk cables they have unless you ask for one of the upper end cables but expect to pay a lot more for them, all depends if its you good race bike too or just a training bike,

    Zip

I switched to jagwire a while back and noticed a big difference. Worth the spend IMO.

I have jagwire on my current bike which i plan to be my commuter/winter bike when I upgrade next month. I called my lbs and they said they use shimano inner/outers so wondering if I should go with it. At 60e for a full cable replacement I obviously want to get the best value I can :)

What cables were you using previously and what difference(s) did you notice?

    I'm just curious.

You've probably thought about this already, but it's well worth learning how to do this yourself. It's very straightforward and will save you about 40 quid each service.

Specifically, which Jagwire cables do people recommend. Think I just put this in another post, but basically, it seems there is a super-expensive link housing and I'm wondering if it's worth the cash? I can get a set of Jagwire road pro xl cables for about €35 from one of the German sites and am wondering if the link housing would be a significant improvement over the road pro set? I'm basically thinking that rather than replace my cable disc brakes with Hydros, if I get a good enough cable set, they should work much better.
