    Hi,

My driving test is scheduled for October I've already cancelled twice before, so I need an exceptional excuse to cancel and not loose my fee, any ideas??

I'm not ready to take the test yet which is why I need to cancel.

    Thanks

You will probably gain more experience from doing the test & failing rather than putting it off.

Just do it you might even pass :-)

Thanks for the vote of confidence :) but I haven't done much reversing around corners, parking, overtaking etc and my confidence although is getting there I think another few weeks at it will give me a better chance.

    Why did you cancel before?

If you're not ready - get ready. There's still a couple of weeks to go.

If you cancel a third time, what's to motivate you not to cancel a fourth time? Or a fifth time?

Just take the test. You can't go around cancelling everything in life. What's the worst that happens?

You must...confront...Vader. Then, only then, a Jedi, will you be. And confront him, you will.

I want to be a fully qualified driver before I drive my kids in a car, I don't want to be driving under a professional/learner permit at all, that's my motmotivation, I will be taking this test this side of Christmas.

So I don't have a car to hop in and practice, I also don't have any friends or family that are willing to take me out and help me practice as most live miles away.

I only have my driving instructor and he costs money and with one lesson a week from now till October will only grant me about 4 lessons and those 4 lessons won't see me ready in time, which is why I need to cancel once more to give me more time to take lessons with my instructor to give me a better chance of passing first time.

Why did you opt for a driving test if you are not fully prepared?

I couldn't apply for my third learner permit without booking in for driving test.

Any licence I had before was used for photographic ID

If you can't find a way to get your money back, then I would just sit the test.

Maybe you will fail, but it will help a lot when you take the test again

Third, eh? Well if you don't mind my saying you appear to have painted yourself into a small bit of a corner through procrastination. :D

You will lose the fee if you try cancel for a third time so you may as well take the test.

How long have you been actually driving? How many lessons have you done? With 4 lessons in between now and the test I do not see how you couldn't pass? Based on what you say you need work on that should be easily covered in 4 lessons - if you have a decent instructor- and if you don't want t waste the money on the test just get out to the family and friends even if they aren't all that nearby... I've a friend who bought a car before she had her provisional as she knew she would need it to practice. You don't seem that motivated to get your full licence in my personal opinion.

If your already a qualified driver you will know that the two main things needed for driving is confidence and knowing how to drive safely, I have every faith in my instructor but as I previously said I needed to work on my confidence.

I'm glad you friend bought herself a car to practice in but that route doesn't feel right to me, as I previously said I want to be 100% fully qualified before driving myself or my family in a car.

Also your personal opinion about my motivation in getting a full licence is not only insulting but it is redundant as you do not know the sacrifices or the obstacles I have overcome to get this far.

On my first licence I had an instructor a really really crap instructor, I paid him upfront for 12lessons and he took me on 3 before doing a runner, I tried taking him to small claims court but he fought me tooth and nail, in the end I let him karma sort him out as it was too stressful as I was pregnant at the time. So procrastinating, I wasn't!!

And she will only be in that car with other qualified drivers as practicing with friends family who have minimum 2 years experience is how you gain confidence, always doing lessons in an intructors car where they have a set of brakes to stop the car will take forever to gain experience and confidence to pass the test...

I got my full licence within 9 months on my first test, done 20+ hours of lessons with 2 different instructors because after 12 hours with the first I did not have sufficient confidence, then the second instructor told me I needed practice to build my confidence so I also went and bought a car 4.5 months in to get as much practice in as possible...

Best of luck getting your full licence and hopefully it all works out for you but do consider doing the test as an insight as to what you need to work on especially as you are planning on doing the test before Christmas anyway!

Just don't even think about booking your test until you have been passing some pre-tests with your instructor and feel confident with all of the maneuvers. The amount of money wasted on failing a test (€85 per go + the fee that your instructor no doubt charges to rent the car) would be much better served doing an extra few lessons.

Do you mind me asking where are you from ? Do you have your 12 lessons done ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,821 ✭✭✭fussyonion

OP, trust me; the worst thing you can do is put this off.

I had 12 lessons starting in January 2008 and my driving test was in July 2008.

My instructor was eager for me to get the test done as soon as I felt ready and not to put it off, so I did that, and luckily I passed first time.
The reason my instructor was eager was that she didn't want me driving around picking up bad habits.

I know a guy who has been a learner driver for three years now and won't take his test because he knows he's picked up bad habits and is afraid.

You may fail, OP, but at least you know what you'll have failed on and can improve.

The feeling you'll get when you pass is euphoric.
Don't put it off, just do it.
Otherwise you're going to keep putting it on the long finger.

This is exactly what I mean I'd rather take more lessons and feel confident in myself which is why I want to postpone the test not cancel it completely!! :-)

"My instructor was eager for me to get the test done as soon as I felt ready"

I'm not ready which is why I was looking to cancel the test to get more lessons to feel more confident that I am capable of driving.

I am chasing that euphoric feeling when I'm told I've passed but I know now or 4weeks from now won't be the time.

I live in Dublin I'm not doing the edt lessons as I had my license before April 2009 which means I don't need to do those lessons.

No I rely completely on my driving instructor and any family and friends that could help live too far away.

    Hi,

A lot of learners believe that the only way to prepare for the driving test is to do "Pretests". (My opinion, a "pretest" can be of very doubtful benefit, it is definitely very poor value for money)

If you are a reasonably safe driver, you should do the test. Simply look on it as a mock test. Your €85 is gone, but for the price of the hire charge of the school car you will get a really genuine "pretest".

And there is always the chance that things may go just right, and you could pass

    Best of luck

That is very valid and sound advice, I think if I can't reschedule, this is the exact optimistic approach I will take!!

    Thank you so much :-)
