Small Automatic Car

    Hi

I currently have an 2011 Toyota Auris 1.4 D4d automatic car and it has been nothing but greef. It's what I think they call a multimode automatic (manual gearbox with the electronics changing gear).

Initially the gearbox have trouble and all the controls for changing gear had to be changed. Now I have problems with diesel in the sump. They initially did a software upgrade, then changed the intercooler and now the same problem needs another software upgrade.

Any my question is what other small diesel automatic car is on the market and what would people recommend me buy other than a Toyota. Are there any proper small automatic cars on the market now without the electronics doing the gear change?

    Thanks

Auris/Prius Hybrid have a proper torque converter.

Or something DSG from the VAG stable?

Prius is/was a cvt I thought. But a decent one compared to other companies efforts.

Renault's DCT gearbox and Ford's Powershift gearboxes are both Dual Clutch set ups, like the VW DSG. Maybe not quite as good, but not far off.

Hard to look past the Golf (or Skoda or SEAT) with the DSG in either Petrol for small mileage or Diesel for higher mileage. Focus Powershift would be 2nd choice.

The hybrids are very good mechanically, and a million times better than multimode to live with.

If I recall correctly the Hyundai i10 and the Suzuki Alto SZ4 have torque converter automatics.

CVT is great for small cars, I think the Honda fit and many Japanese imports have them, avoid semi automatics as you will feel sea sick as the car jolts to gear up, in a good auto box you should not feel anything but smooth acceleration. Japanese imports if you want a cheap small auto(Mazda Demio, Honda fit) or if you want something a bit more upper class then a DSG golf.
