This has prob been answered a thousand times. Married couple, own their own house. 1 looses job, the other is on about 35k per annum. What would the person that looses their job expect to get on job seekers. The person was in full time employment for the previous 8 years and has never claimed any kind of allowance

They should apply for JSB straight away.http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/unemployed_people/jobseekers_benefit.html

This happened to us about 5 years ago, my wife got JSB for one year but then after a year JSA was means tested and we got nothing.
