Need to get timing belt done on my 07 Focus before the NCT. It has a Duratec HE 1.8 FFV petrol engine. Does this type of engine have a "wet "timing belt? Do i need to get anything else replaced eg water pump while at the job? Would a main dealer charge through the nose for this job? Have had no trouble since i bought it. Do all usual servicing myself but this would be a specialised job. Bought car back in 2010 second hand from a Skoda dealer. Could i go back to him or would a good independent mechanic take it on?

I thought those 1.8 duratec engines are Mazda engines and they use a timing chain instead of a belt. Are you sure it has belt ?

    A few things here.

Why would you get your belt changed for the NCT??? No need to, only change it when its due.

The "wet belt" is only on some of the 1.8 diesels.

And your engine has a timing chain, not a belt.

Well there's over 120k km on clock so I'd get it done for peace of mind. Damn sight cheaper than paying to repair a bust engine.

And what is your point exactly? Apart from repeating what the others have clarified.

Chains do not normally need to be changed unless they stretch.

You don't need to change timing chain unless it causes any issue.

Timing belts needs to be changed at certain time/mileage intervals as they perish.

So you may not need to change anything in this case.

My point was that you were still intent on changing something that you don't have.....after you were told you don't have it.

Yeah, I have the same engine in a Volvo and there is no need to change the timing chain at a specific interval.

Ok it's a timing chain i have so. More than i knew. Safe enough for a while so.
