Is Standard Post safe for overseas items?

I'd be posting small items in a padded envelope around Europe. Not valuable or fragile ~€15-20. I remember hearing something about some postmen stealing post and that kinda gave me the idea that this could easily happen when using standard post. Does it actually happen that often (in foreign countries or Ireland?) ? Is Standard post with no tracking/insurance usually a safe option?

Send it by standard post if you can afford to lose the item. certain countries in europe are notorious for parcels going "missing"

Write the address clearly and in block capitals. Make sure the postcode is correct and seal the package properly.

Most "missing" items are due to appalling writing and also incorrect addresses/postcode.

Surprised to hear of Canada. I see lots of sellers excluding Italy alright.

I think you are obliged to use tracking and can leave yourself open to a scamming buyer claiming they never got it. I think an post will give a receipt of sending of normal post but do not know how that holds up if people claim never to have got it.
