Will it have all the songs from the original in it?

From the studio that brought you "The Jungle Book" (1967), "The Jungle Book" (1994), "The Jungle Book: Mowgli's Story" (1998) & "The Jungle Book 2" (2003)

Will it have all the songs from the original in it?

Faverou [SP?] has come out saying it's not a musical, however I have read somewhere that Bill Murray recorded "Bare Necessities" & that there's at least one more original song that one of the Sherman Brothers [wrote the original songs] wrote specifically for it.

Disney is known for playing down the musical content of it's movies recently in advance marketing.

There's a nod to bare necessities at the end when they're floating down the river, you can hear a bit of it being whistled.

    This looks amazing

That little whistle of bare necessities has had me singing it constantly since yesterday :o

Scarlett's voice work sounds exquisite. This looks very promising.

Seems like it has a dangerous case of the ol' 'contemporary Disney blockbuster' aesthetic. Like Alice in Wonderland and Oz but lacking even their explicitly fantastical elements, the whole thing simply looks distractingly artificial. The CG animals are unavoidable, naturally, but everything else - the human movement, the landscapes, the lighting, the camera movements - just give off this unpleasantly potent sense of falseness, that lacks the consistency to be 'realistic' and the character to pull off hyper stylised. Early days yet, of course, but it's a generic and ugly look at this early stage, and Favreau has never been known for his visual imagination.

It has the look of a film so far that they didn't really give it a go, like they thought about an actual jungle based film and made do with shiny images and computer motion. It looks the type of film that instead of being immersed in it, half way through you'll start imagining the work the kid had to do working with all the things he couldn't see as they were filming.

    Superbowl trailer:

Looks good. I haven't seen the full animated films but parts of that trailer remind me of the Lion King.

Planning to see this on coming Tuesday. One of the best memories of my childhood.

Saw this over the weekend, amazing film. Visually Beautiful, and Bill Murray as usual is a stand out. Plays Baloo perfectly.

The only thing I missed from the animated version was the Elephants interaction.

Saw it on Friday. Great film in 3D but not for young kids. There are quiet a few scary parts in it.

Is it really worth going to see in 3D or would 2D still be pretty good? Just checked the local cinema listings and they aren't showing it in 3D (they never get anything good in 3D).

Young kids should be scared, thats part of the fun.

The 3d is definitely worth seeing.

Saw this with an eight year old and an eleven year old. Both were more thrilled than scared. Although the youngest did move a bit closer whenever Shere Khan was on screen.

2d was fine, the story romped along fast enough that I didn't need the extra layer of visual trickery.

Overall an absolutely great film and one of the best things to come out of Disney in a long while. Gorgeous to look at, some of the recreations of scenes from the animated film just made me grin ridiculously (the walking in front of the waterfall shot was simple stunning). A great take on a couple of the songs by Murray and Walken and a genuinely nasty snarling Idris Elba making Shere Khan a vicious and dangerous presence.

Very clever to base the characters on the source short stories as much as the original film. If anything this film surpasses the original in every way except musically... and that is with the added qualifier that I am a huge fan of Disney original.

Saw it over the weekend (in glorious 2D; didn't feel I was missing anything at all).

    Really good film.

Just back from this and I have to say I was underwhelmed. The animation is pretty poor, nowhere near at the same level as something like Dawn/Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it felt like I was watching a video game at times and the green screen was obvious.

It also can't make up it's mind whether it wants to be a remake or a new adaptation. There are differences in the plot but the songs are shoehorned in for no other reason as to appeal to our sentimentality and they're just not as good.

It's an average film in its own right but it's a poor imitation of the 1960s version.

Fairly standard fare with nothing really special about it. I didn't care for the voice acting at all. The performances were fine but it felt like they were just trying to get as many celebs in as possible to sell it.

Because of the similarities with the original, I kept comparing and the original won every time. The one that really bothered me was Elba, I love him as an actor but he just came across as angry, there wasn't the menace that George Sanders brought to the role.

Agreed. He seems a bit too thuggish here compared to the intellectual menace provided by Sanders.

    The scene where
    he kills Akela
was badly handled, seemed too rushed. Can't solely blame Elba for that thought, down to direction.

Looking the cast for Andy Serkis's version due in 2018 and it looks more promising (Cumberbatch as Shere Khan, Bale as Bagheera, Serkis himself as Baloo) but I really hope they do something different with it, I think they will because it's a different studio.

We're getting a sequel to this as well. We might not be far off market saturation for the same story. Cumberbatch as Shere Khan could be interesting though.

Has it been confirmed? I mean we will get one, Favreau has said he'd definitely do another one and I reckon this will make a **** tonne of money, also
the ending left it open for more which I didn't really like, the ending to the original where Mowgli goes back to the village is perfect, maybe we'll get it in the sequel.

Saturation is a risk but Favreau has said this film took three years to make so I reckon we're looking at 2020 release. Serkis' version was pushed back a year to give people time to forget this one so I could see Disney doing the same depending on how that version pans out.

Apparently so. Not direct confirmation but I think a sequel is very likely.

Even so. It's multiple retellings of the same story in the space of a few years.

Went to see it over the weekend. Thought I'd hate it but I actually loved it. Felt much darker than the original... As others aluded to I preferred the actors in the original, especially the wolves, and idris Elba seemed weird to me, couldn't help but see him standing in a studio behind a mic always trying to control his levels... The others sounded very natural. Walken was the best IMO.

Surprised how many people liked this. Thought it was quite poor, though the CGI was alright. Thought Idris Elba was poor as Shere Khan. Far too brutish and not sinister enough. As someone else said, thought the
death of the alpha in the Wolfpack who I can't remember atm was very badly done. Didn't even realise he was actually dead until it was mentioned 30 mins later.
. I also thought whoever played Mowgli was horrifically bad. Like someone in a primary school Christmas play. Didnt like the direction they went with King Louis either, what was the point of him
    being a giant?
. Also the comic relief characters like Baloo's mates at the honeycomb part were rubbish.

I did actually like the darker tone of the movie and thought that was an interesting way to go down as definitely something I'd be in favour of seeing in the future for live action remakes of Disney movies. Just feel the casting was poor, especially with Mowgli and the way the plot was thrown together wasn't great, very little character development. A little bit too much emphasis on the wolves for my liking. And nowhere near enough Kaa.

Went to see this last week and really enjoyed it, particularly the CGI aspect. After a few minutes I forgot it was CGI and was able to enjoy the vocal performances. I thought Christopher Walken was particularly good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,706 ✭✭✭sadie06

I absolutely loved this, but agree that the original songs could have been left out. It seemed like a panicked move to have them in there.

I thought the majority of the voice work was fantastic, and the little boy was brilliant. I liked him far more than the original Mowgli, who I remember finding annoying as a kid.

It's nowhere near as joyous as the original, but it takes you on a more interesting journey with real edge of your seat moments.

Why have King Louis so ridiculously big though?

    Really enjoyed this movie.

So many positives about it from the CGI to the voice acting it was all perfect.
The pacing of the movie is perfect, and its different enough from the original to maintain interest.

Said so in the song, he's a Gigantopithecus this time around rather than an Orangutan. :D No idea why they went that route though.

I saw this a couple of nights ago and really enjoyed it, a solid family adventure, loved the inclusion of the songs too. The CG set a new standard imo, amazing work.

Orangutans aren't native to India apparently. Even so Gigantpithecus would grow to maybe 9 feet or so, Louis in this was the size of the house, but Favreau said some of the animals were larger to account for the small boy's perspective.

Loved this movie. Jungle Book was my favourite Disney animation growing up and I was hesitant about this version. I only saw the trailer once, wasn't too gone on it but I really enjoyed it all. If you've any reservations about it then just forget them and go see it.

Thought it took a while to find its feet, quite honestly. But, it was rather charming overall. Bill Murray's bear was just great, as was Christopher Walken. Songs were at a minimum, surprisingly.

I really liked this movie as well. I thought the songs fitted in very well. I couldn't remember the film from when I watched it as a kid so I was glued to see how it panned out. I would definitely recommend this film.

    Went to see this today.

What an utterly lovely, enjoyable movie.

It looked gorgeous, the casting was fantastic with Walken being a particular highlight.

I havnt enjoyed something in the cinema as much as I enjoyed this in quite some time.
