07' Golf MK5 1.4 TSI 140BHP engine issues (BMY - engine code)

    Hi there guys,

Sometimes when my car is running on idle gear the entire body shakes pretty badly. I've already checked things like ignition coils, spark plugs. When connected to the VAG computer it is showing that the last cylinder misfires from time to time. I am worried that this could be the beginning of the famous TSI timing chain issue. When the car is driving as normal everything seems just fine. Also when I'm not driving it for 3-4 days, right after starting the engine I can hear loud rattling sound from the left side of the engine, the sound goes off after 1-2 seconds and then it's just fine for another week or so. The car has 135k km on the clock. Any ideas what could it be?

My default answer to questions like these is that out could be a coil pack. They don't always fail entirely but instead just cause problems at certain RPM. But that's just a thought.

Just noticed you said you checked the coils. How? If you don't mind me asking.

The symptoms associated with the timing cain stretch are usually poor performance/power throughout the speed range and occasionally crank/cam shaft synchronisation faults when the timing slips. As it is most prononced at idle, I would be looking at fuel trim values using VCDS/VAGCOM. If your short term trim is in excess of +10-12% at idle, firstly look for a vacuum leak, though chances are your idle speed will also be higher than normal (i.e. your rev counter will be at 1000+ RPM when engine is warm. I would also be interested in the individual misfire counter figures at idle and whilst driving.

I've swapped them around and also replaced the one in the misfiring cylinder. I know that this could also be faulty injector but before I replace it I'd rather get some advice first as it's not as cheap as brand new ignition coil :/

    @ Waterson

Can't remember what the fault code was but definetely checked right after it and it was the last (4th) cylinder misfiring from time to time (sometimes once every 30sec, sometimes I've had to wait couple of minutes to see it happening again). When it comes to RPM on idle it doesn't go any higher than regular 700RPM, it's always the same. When I press throttle and the RPM goes up to let's say 1000RPM - the problem doesn't exist. Also I do not have any power/accelleration issues. That timing chain sound worries me a lot. I've seen a post the other day and started to think ;/ Just look up phrase "Golf TSI 170bhp new timing chain cost", can't post the link directly as I'm a fresh user :)

The rattle you can hear from the timing chain would be most likely due to cold engine oil taking a moment to warm up and so the chain runs dry for a small time, and it takes time for the hydraulic lash adjusters to fill up also which results in tappety noise fom the top of the engine, If it goes away after 30 seconds or so, dont be concerned.
So the misfire counter is only cylinder 4 and the symptoms are only experienced when idling, I would move in the direction of checking the ignition components of that cylinder. The compression is highest when at idle, so a faulty spark plug etc. may struggle to operate in these conditions. If you remove the plug from 4 and fit it in, say cylinder 3, does the misfire counter now register on cylinder 3 instead...if you follow that process with the coil also you might narrow down the issue quickly.

Alright so I've replaced the whole set of spark plugs and swapped ignition coils around but the issue is still pointing at the cylinder 4. We've also checked compression in each cylinder but they all look just fine, getting proper values there even on cylinder 4. Any ideas what would be the next step?

the error code I was getting is:
    P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

At this point I would be pulling the oscilloscope out and checking ignition primary circuit to cylinder 4 coil and also the fuel injector current draw...you really need a VCDS plug in and to collate as much data as possible to diagnose this I think. That said, sometimes cylinder specific misfire counters can be wrong and lead you down the garden path.

Hey guys i know thread is a little old but looking for aome advice. I have my 2008 tsi 140bhp bmy engine. It has 85k miles/had timing chain done at the end of 2015 at 57k. Engine managment light came on other day and slow speed. Code p000a. Camshaft position slow response. So replaced camshaft sensor and cleared codes. It returned later on that day with new code. P3008 manufacturer control/ so after a bit of reading it relates to camshaft position sensor so replaced again ith new o ring seal and same again. So i fear the dreaded timing chain issue now. If my chain is stretched slightly taking into considering the car still drives perfect and no rattles or bangs. Noises from cold etc. Just engine managent light keeps coming back. Is it possible to just change tensioner and a good oil service. Is this possible to throw the cam signal back in sync and stop throwing up codes? Any help aprreciated thnks in advance. OLDSKOOL 85
