    Hi Folks

I do drive though would prefer to use public transport. I would need to be in college for 930am...Very grateful for any feedback...

train to connolly, hop on the luas to tallaght seems to be the easiest option. i don't know does the luas go right to the door but there might be a dublin bus service that may go nearer to where your course is . i wouldn't know what number though.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

Route 27 stops outside Connolly Station and gets you to Tallaght IT. Not sure how long it will take from there, I'm afraid. The Luas leaves you a few minutes walk from the college gates. It takes about 45 minutes.

One thing to be aware of is that the first train isn't due to in till 8:47AM so you will be cutting it fine.

Does any train from Sligo get into Conolly before 800 though?

That's what the OP would need.

you could drive Sligo - Longford and then one of the early trains from there to Connolly

OP - here is the train timetable for the Sligo Line:
    http://www.irishrail.ie/media/07_dublin-sligo_25052015.pdf?v=gradgca

    Options from Connolly are either:
    - LUAS to Tallaght from Busaras (44 minutes and 10 minute walk)
    - 27 Bus to IT Tallaght (50-60 minutes)

4 hours by rail or 2.5 hours by road, by the looks of it.

Put your exact locations (home and IT Tallaght) and relevant dates and times into www.a-b.ie and tweak the settings. Make sure you have selected "take neighbouring stops into account for origin and destination maximum 20 min walk".

Would it make sense to come down the night before? Otherwise it becomes an exceptionally long day. You would need to be in Sligo station for 05:45 (or 01:00 if getting a coach). If classes continue until 17:00, you don't get home until after 22:00.

One option would be to get the 05:45 from Sligo and change to Bus Éireann route 115 at Kilcock and then to Luas at Heuston, but the changes could get messy in the middle of winter. You would get there for 09:25 though. It might mean the occasional taxi instead of Luas.
you could drive Sligo - Longford and then one of the early trains from there to Connolly
    This sounds like a plan.

I've done Sligo - Celbridge and back several times. You'd be bloody lucky to get to Celbridge alone in that time and allow a hour extra to get to Tallaght at any time after 6.30 in the morning.

Either that or there must be some amazing hover cars around that I've somehow missed.

You're probably right. Leixlip to Sligo is about 2.5 hours on the limit. Add another 30 mins for Tallaght.

Still winning over public transport though due to lack of orbital routes.

Hi Folks......Firstly I am new to Boards and want to say a big Thank You to you all for your responses and suggestions. Well I did this route last week....driving from Sligo to Longford, getting train at 6 15 am into Connolly, then Luas to Tallagh and taxi to IICP college which is in Kilinarden Business Park....I was at my desk at 9 29am with lecture starting at 9 30am !!
Yes early start and not much spare time !....though very pleased to be able to do it and it is just one day per week.
I will look at other ideas you have put forward. Going up the night before would be lovely though not possible for me at the moment.

Again thank you so much to you all for your help....and what a great resource Boards is ....my brother recommended I use it and as always he is full of great ideas....Seacreature

God bless your dedication. Please consider some alternative (cheap hotel close to Tallaght?) if you feel tired driving home from Longford to Sligo in the evenings. Don't end up falling asleep at the wheel....could easily happen.

Suggestion: next time continue to Tara St station, your train arrives there at 8.21, go around the corner to Poolbeg St and get the 8.30 65B, it will drop you outside Killinarden Enterprise Centre.

Pearse and Tara Street are separate stations.

    As suggested above:
Take the 06:15 train from Longford to Tara Street, arriving there at 08:22.

The 65b leaves from Poolbeg Street at 08:30, which is a 2 minute walk from the front entrance of Tara Street Station.

    Here is the walking route:
    https://goo.gl/maps/NiNaopTJFm22

The bus should take about 45-50 minutes to get to the Enterprise Centre (it stops outside it).

The full 65b timetable is here:
    http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/65b2/

Allow about an hour to get back to the city in the afternoon/evening.

Coming back to town you can also use the 49 and 54a routes which stop close by:
49 on Firhouse Road West: Far side of road - walk back through the roundabout (stop 7183) -allow about 5 minutes for the bus to get from the terminus to there.
54a from Kiltipper Way (stop 5162). Just head back to the roundabout, and turn right. The stop should be straight in front of you. Be there at the departure time on the timetable.
65b stop is stop 6170 on far side of road - Allow about 5-10 minutes for the bus to get from the terminus.

    Timetables are at:
    49: http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/49/
    54a: http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/54a-Revised-Times1/

Tara Street Station is a different station, between Pearse and Connolly. http://www.irishrail.ie/travel-information/station-and-route-maps

The 65 starts on Polbeg Street, right next to Tara Street Station. http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/RTPI/Sources-of-Real-Time-Information/?searchtype=view&searchquery=7564
