Fist, sorry for posting questions that may have been asked/answered allready

Recently bought a LG 42UB820V from Argos for my 70+ mother

    http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10152&catalogId=14551&langId=111&productId=724574

She has UPC old cabel [without STB] and gets the basic 17 chanels but the Irish ones are very bad quality, the UK ones are passabell.

I was thinking the TV has decoder built in so all she would need is a new aeial to get saorview
Would i be right in saying a new roof top would be the best ?
She is about 22/23km NW from KIPPURE & THREE ROCK [almost line of sight to Kippure]

There is an old sky dish aswell would this be an option ?

Thanks for anyhelp you can provide

Yeah, you'll need a suitable aerial for Saorview, & if you're getting someone in to install it, you might as well go with a rooftop aerial. If you want to DIY, & aren't happy about climbing onto the roof, you could try something in the attic.

That TV probably has a satellite tuner too so, if the dish is still properly aligned & the electronics working, you could hook this up & get the free UK channels. (The satellite connection will be a female f-connector, usually located beside the terrestrial aerial connection, & labeled 'LNB-in'. If the male connector is still on the cable from the dish, it will be obvious where it goes.)

It's possible the process for switching between UK (satellite) & Irish (terrestrial) channels will seem a bit more complicated than needs be, involving several menu steps, but I'm not sure on this.

Mount an aerial close to the dish. It should be possible to site the two close to each other as you are NW of Kippure. Use a combiner/splitter to use the satellite cable to feed the signal to the TV. Split it at the TV. Your TV does not appear to have a sat tuner, but you can get a Freesat STB and this will get you all the UK TV at no cost (after you buy all the kit). You can the cancel UPC.

It has a satellite connection alright.
    Thanks for the replies

Well that should get you sorted for the free UK channels, although they won't be presented in a nice orderly programme guide like Sky or Freesat. (This TV is not a Freesat branded product.)

If you do a scan of the relevant satellites, you'll end up with all the BBC & ITV regions, & no doubt a lot of channels of no interest whatsoever. I'd imagine they could be deleted or moved to suit, though this can be a pain with so many channels. Also there will only be now-&-next programme info., though I suppose it's better than the zero info. from UPC analogue.

As for Saorview, if you happen to have any kind of UHF aerial lying around, even an indoor set-top type, it could be worth a try, though even if an aerial of this kind appears to 'work', I wouldn't be surprised if performance turns out to be unreliable.

    Thanks.
Shes not the most tec minded person so a programme guide would just confuse her,she just scrolls through the numbers to find something.

The sky dish is twin fed, would it be ok to just use one of the feeds and an extention to see what the tv picks up ?
Iv not seen the old aerial that use to be in the attic the last few times i was up there but will ask her about it

Of course. You just need a need a long enough length of satellite cable and fconnectors to junction it from the lnb to the tv or if there are two cables coming into the house already (you could use a fconnector back to back). You'll get all these channels. http://www.freesat.co.uk/channels

Well I'll just mention anyway that it was posted here in the past that some Sony smart TVs can access an online EPG, not sure about LG though.

There may also be a channel editor available if you can transfer the channel list to a computer, rather than ploughing through it using the TV remote.

It should be 28.2 for the Sky Channels. Are you able to select the Satellite or does it auto detect?

Under satellite pick Astra 28.2E. For antenna use digital and ignore cable. Obviously you need an aerial(antenna) connected as well as a dish to use both.

Going by this announcement from LG there may be firmware updates for this TV in future that will convert the satellite tuning from FTA to Freesat.
