Single car collision

    Hi all,

I was driving down the back roads in Wicklow at around 8 on Friday night. I came to a sharp, downhill left turn but I got no traction and skidded straight into the wall at the side of the road. Neither my passenger nor myself were injured and the car was still driveable. There was no damage to the wall but the drivers front side got a bit smashed up.

Would this need to be reported?

To your insurance company definitely but you could report it to Gardai for the record but probably not necessary.

I'm going to ring my insurance company tomorrow. I wasn't too sure about the Garda tho. I'll see what the insurance company say too. Thanks for the reply.

Unless you want to claim why tell anyone?

Passenger may claim in the future?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,261 ✭✭✭mgbgt1978

    They might....
....but as the Op seems to be hinting that they probably won't (reading between the lines here), why would he want to bring about a possible rise in his renewal cost ?
Even if the Passenger were to claim for personal injuries next year the fact that he hasn't reported anything now will make no difference to what ensues.

I can't really see a point in reporting that to insurance company.

What was the cause? Bad tyres? Unusually slippy surface - oil, leaves etc? Poor driving skills ? Lack of experience?

Wouldn't report it if I was you. If the passenger was to claim it won't make any difference if you reported it or not.

As there was a passenger in the car it needs to be reported for 'record purposes' and it needs to be done as soon as possible. If you don't and a claim comes in months later, you will have prejudiced their investigations. The 3rd party (passenger) will have to be compensated, but your insurers may cancel or severely load your policy for failing to comply with claims conditions

Had the OP been on his own, I wouldn't bother

I doubt the passenger will claim as she's my girlfriend.

It was dark and lashing rain. The road was a narrow back road and I'd say I had slowed down to 40 - 50km/h by the time I reached the turn. From memory the road surface looked to be worn smooth causing the lack of traction (It looked like ice). The tyres have more than enough thread depth and there was no flat spot on them after the skid. I'd say it was aquaplaning.

We were lucky, because there was a guy in a Jeep behind us who nearly did the same thing. He could have smashed into the back of us. He pulled up to check that we were okay. I let him know we were grand and he could head off.

I'm not being funny or mean, but she may not always be your girlfriend and she has 2 years to lodge a claim. Only you can judge the situation, but I have seen it happen

I understand your point, but I trust her, and her dad told me not to bother with the insurance company either.

OP said in a first post that she no one was injured.
So what could she lodge a claim for?

    Of course not OP. Relax

You are long enough around this forum to know what 'might' happen. I've given my advice, nobody is compelled to take it

+1 Cinio you must have seen threads here where a poster was involved in a minor accident, the other party said they were ok and a few weeks later they developed neck pain, usually after some advice they no doubt got while sitting on a bar stool.

If the OP reports this to his insurance company, it will definitely be categorised as a pending clam because he had a passenger on board and he will get screwed at his next renewal.

Remembering the recent tyre thread, OP, what make are the tyres? And great that you and your gf walked away from the collision unharmed!
