So I Bought a bmw 316i (2007) 100,000 km on the clock a few months back. I've noticed that the alloys get warm and on one particularly stop/start journey began to 'squeel'. This hasnt happened since...should I be worried?

Also anything else I should look out for? e.g. timing belt etc?

Have had no issues in the 3 months I've owned it.

The vacuum pump on these leaks oil onto the exhaust, creates some smell. You can replace the o-ring in the pump with the one from the oil filter.

No timing belt it's a chain. Keep the oil changed/checked. Also keep an eye on coolant levels

Thanks. Silly question but any way to check oil level without a dipstick, sensor only!

What type of smell is it with that type of leak?

I would think you have a faulty brake caliper.
Does the hub get very hot after driving?
Does squealing come and go when you touch the brakes?

Hard to say, all 4 wheels get very warm but i had a civic before that had calliper problems where the alloy got almost red hot.

The wheels on the bmw dont get anywhere near as hot

Alloys should not get hot at all. Suggest you take it to a mechanic that can check the calipers and flush the brake fluid.

Anyone know if/ when the timing belt should be replaced?

    If we're still talking 2007 316i it is E90. Has a chain*

*not 100% so maybe someone else can confirm.

They have a chain and should only need changing if it becomes noisy/stretches.

Thanks all. Yes its a chain, no noise thankfully! First premium-ish car I've owned so I want to head off any expensive repair bills.

When I say premium I mean for me at least.. 7 yr old 316i prob not so premium for some people :-D

If your wheels are hot then check the air pressure. Low pressure can make the wheels hot.
