Dirty Diesel?

    Hi
I have a 2010 VW Golf 1.6TDi, purchased 3 months ago with 84K miles on it. Last week I noticed the rev counter jumping slightly when the car was in neutral. Then yesterday on my way to work, the car stalled on me at four different junctions when shifting down the gears.
Yesterday I filled it with diesel and when I started to drive there was extremely heavy black smoke for approx 1 mile (driving in town).
I took it to the garage I bought it from and he checked the fuel and there was no warning lights on.
Today I was going for a drive when smoke started coming from the exhaust and the dpf light came on?
Any one come across this before please?

Im sure the experts will respond later when the see your post do you have access to an obd reader or does any body you know have ?

You can start by scanning the car for any fault codes as the light came on it should have one that will help you out.

If you suspect dirty diesel it might be the case that the fuel filter needs to be replaced.

Im no way handy with cars:( but hope this helps you, hope you get the car sorted :) keep us updated anyway

Dirty diesel is not that common unless you have good reason to believe it is the case it is more likely fault with engine.

Get the codes read sounds like egr valve

Smoke can be a consequence of a leak in the air piping too, can cause cut out etc. Check the tubes and filter.

It sounds like your problems started before you filled it with that diesel?
Do you always from from same petrol station?
    Anyway, get codes scanned.

    Thanks for the replies.
Quick update, I drove the car this morning, same problems, (dpf filter and cutting out at junction going from 3rd to 2nd gear). Pulled up at a shop and on driving the DPF light went out and now I have engine management light flashing and the car in limp mode.

Were the problems occurring immediately after you filled up? Because the previous fuel would still be in the pipes and filter so you wouldn't be using the new fuel until a while after starting.

Can't believe no one said this and worse of all "Oh yeah ,washed diesel, I haven't seen the car, I don't know the garage but I am absolutely sure about this!"
Anyway, to the matter at hand.
Do you do a lot of town driving? Not get out on the motorway much? (I sound like an infomercial)
In that case it could be that regeneration of the DPF failed and it has finally gummed up, hence black smoke, cutting out, DPF warning and limp mode with engine warning light on.
Will have to be taken out and cleaned/replaced. You could think about getting rid of it altogether, this would involve a bit of engine trickery and might cause issues with future NCT's.

No don't do much town driving, have been on motorways recently and given it a good drive on them (approx 130KPH).
The EGR valve had to be replaced just over a month ago, but I am not sure if the problems started happening just after that or not.

I forgot to add that I bought the car from a dealer at the end of June with 6 months warranty so hopefully it will be covered by that.

EGR valve failure suggests your journeys are really short? How long do you spend on motorways on your average trip? Speed is irrelevant.

The DPF needs a good 30 minute run on the motorway alone if not more.

    Probably from the previous owner.

Could be why the DPF is also failing.

This is not always the case. Get the car back to the garage and have the OBD fault codes taken.

True - many, many EGR / EGR Intercooler failures on all different makes/models at various different mileages, will attest to this.

Opel and VAG seem to be the worst, but probably due to the numbers on fleet.

Failure of either part is usually combined with low coolant as well, so check that OP. Possible the EGR valve was just replaced and another part of the system has gone now.

EGR has to be placed very close to a heat source due to what it does, but that means it heats up and cools down a lot, so suffers metal fatigue from constant expansion and contraction leading to failures over time.

    Update:
Went to go to work this morning and drop the car to the mechanic, and the engine managment light was flashing and also the cataltyic converter light came on also.
Mechanic rang me this afternoon to say that he had regen the DPF but light is still on. He thinks it is a sensor but there are 2 on the DPF and he is unsure which.

Did he even run diagnostics on the feckin thing? If so what codes came up?

Sorry 5w30 I don't know what codes came up. :o

Have you considered getting a DPF delete downpipe (Google it, I can't post links) and then doing a remap?

It would solve your issues permanently.

    Quick update:
Got the car back on Thursday. Mechanic said he replaced one of the sensors on the DPF and then done a regen for over an hour which cleared all the faults.
Car was driving great. However today, i was driving (only 1.5 miles) when white smoke came from exhaust and the DPF light came on again. Back to the mechanic again monday. :(
