From that list the *vitara* or Rav. Sante fe engine had a habit of dying prematurely and replacements are like hens teeth

does this go for the older santa fe up to 07 old shape?

That I'm not sure of tbh. If you do a quick Google search "sante fe engine" it should give Smth.. I'd have the vitara. What year/age you thinking of?

Mate of mine does a lot of deer shooting. He had a santa fe 07 new shape and it was a ball of ****e and would go nowhere. I was surprised what he replaced it with. A suzuki SX4 4wheel drive version. He replaced the tyres with a slightly bigger set and the ground clearance is only ~10mm less than the santa fe. It is terrific off road. It goes places the santa fe never could and is doing 50 mpg on his 80 mile a day round trip daily commute for work. If you can live with the styling it might be an option. I am not sure I could. I call it the austerity jeep.

Long journeys he says she is. Just making a suggestion here. I would tend to believe it as he is a very easy driver. I am getting 32 combined from a 3.0 dmax. I hope you don't mind me saying this, but you have a seriously abrasive posting style.
Edited to say a quick google tells me on honest john website that the diesel models are achieving that mpg.

When I was buying I was repeatedly told to stay clear of the SantaFe, older ones were more reliable. Friend had newer one and engine was replaced twice at his expense.

The sorrento is highly regarded by most. Not heard a bad story on one. However, it is a 2.5

Honda CRV? Reliable car really. As capable off-road as a Sportage or Santa Fe

Most of the softroaders/Korean types won't be suited to serious off roading. They are part time AWD (Not 4WD) at best maybe. Lack ground clearance and aren't really designed to be taken off the tarmac.

A Subaru Forester would fair a lot better than Santa Fe types too. It is AWD but full time AWD. If you get the non turbo and manual options it does have somewhat of a low range (drops by about 15% as opposed to a 50% drop with proper low range).

Out of those, the Vitara would be the best of the bunch with proper 4X4 and low range with good clearance. O good smaller option is a Suzuki Jimny. Bit small but should be able to get one with a 1.3L or 1.6L engine. Good groudn clearance and proper 4x4 with low range.
