Ive a friend's wedding coming up in December and Im wondering if a black suit and black tie is ok for a wedding? It isnt a black tie event I just seem to pull off this look well. Is it too boring for a wedding?

I think it is perfect. Weddings are a formal affair.
I personally dislike when men wear brown shoes to a wedding as I find them too informal.
Plus if you like that look you will feel more comfortable on the day.

    What colour shirt?

If you're dressed like you are going to a black tie event then you will look a bit out of place.

    BTW, brown shoes are acceptable

If you are wearing a black suit don't wear a black tie. Wear a tie with a bit of colour you're going to a wedding not a funeral.

Black suit & tie for a winter wedding seems fine to me- some would disagree. What I would recommend is making it a bit celebratory with details. Put a flower or lapel pin on, gold cuff links, pop of colour in your socks etc. Changing out the colour of your shirt with a black suit & tie is risky enough. You could end up looking like a teenager trying to jazz up his debs suit. You could try a grey shirt, would look very smart but take you out of possible "funeral" wear.

And I don't know what the problem is with brown shoes for a wedding, that's bizarre. Brown shoes are perfectly formal, and tbh look better and richer with certain colours of suits than black. Obviously though, never wear brown shoes with a black suit!

If you're going with a black suit then as B&VC says, try to make it look more lively. This guy does it well: here

I find that a dark grey or a navy is a lot easier to find shirts and ties for.

Unless you moonlight as an undertaker or play in a Blues Brothers tribute band a black suit is a terrible choice for just about any occasion. The only exception being a black tie event where you'll get away with one if you don't own a tuxedo.

If you're buying or renting a suit get one in charcoal, grey or navy. You'll look better in it and the suit will be far more versatile for future wear.

    A white shirt.

Hollywood events would beg to differ :)

Maybe its an Irish thing not liking this look? Loads of celebs wear black suit, black tie and a white shirt to events that arent black tie so maybe its more accepted in the States.

I think they wear the black suit/white shirt/black tie to evening events where traditionally a tuxedo would have been worn. For the average person who doesn't wear suits to work and wants to invest a few hundred quid into a suit it makes sense to get something that can be worn a few times a year for weddings/christenings/interviews/graduations and what have you.
