Hi guys, I live in Thailand, but am home for a few weeks, so would like to get a scooter license.

How easy is this to get? Is there a crazy waiting list?

I've been driving around Thailand on my scooter with no license for years, the deal there is, if you get stopped, you just pay off the cop, like $5, but think it's about time I got a license.

You need to get a learner permit first. To get that you need to do the theory test for motorcycles (€45), pass it and get the certificate. Then you apply at one of the NDLS centres with the relevant forms and ID and stuff, you also have to pay for that. There's 4 different categories of motorcycle, AM which is 50cc, A1 is 125 cc, A2 is up to 35 kW of power and A is any bike. It depends on your age which one you can get, A2 is 18 and A is 24 and even A2 will be fine for most scooters.

None of that will take too much time or money but to be road legal and get the actual licence you will need to do Initial Basic Training (IBT) which will cost at least €400 and then you will have to wait 6 months from the date you get the learner permit before you can sit your test for the full licence. You could just get the learner permit this time around and when you come back to Ireland after 6 months do the rest.

as far as I know its only in Ireland that you have to wait !@#$ 6 months to receive full license, its a joke...

Wow, this is a joke! 6 months!

Do they still offer provisional licenses? I had one of these years ago.

Nope, this is an EU directive. To ride a 50cc scooter now you need to pass a theory test, do a load of lessons etc as explained above. IF you fancy something bigger down the line you have to do the whole process again. The scooter / motorbike market is in freefall because of it.

IBT will cost at least €500 on its own. There's no such thing as casually picking up a bike or scooter like it used to be. It's a fully formal process whether it's for a Honda 50 or a Hayabusa.

If you have a full car licence since before 2006 then you have the AM 50cc full entitlement already but not the A1 you'd need for a 125 scooter (or bike). Just thought it might be worth mentioning in case...

Jesus! So glad I did my test pre '13! As another poster said the Bike market must be in freefall with all these regulations now.
