Split 5th Class

    Hey all

Just wondering if anyone can help please. My son has just started in 5th class but the class has been split. Usually 5th and 6th are in the masters room but because of the split and the normal teach being off on sick leave, he has a sub teacher. We were told prior to this split (which has been their 3rd split!!) that both 5th classes would have the same homework and follow the same curriculum as such every day. Obviously this is not happening, hence this message.
Firstly can someone tell me how the roll book is organised e.g. is it in alphabetical order?
How often can classes be split as I was led to believe that the maximum was twice?
I'm so upset over the lack of homework compared with the other 5th class. Also I feel that the disipline is slack as my son is coming home with an attitude every day and laughing at his teacher. She is also telling them that if they can't answer something, then leave it there!!!
The principal is no help, the vice principal is on sick leave and I don't know who to speak with about this whole situation.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Can I just start by saying that Split classes are the biggest nightmare for any school. We dread the thoughts of having to do them but unfortunately the option is Split class of 25 or one straight class with 16 and next door with 32. We give parents the option every year of which they would prefer and the split makes more sense.
I have had splits 9 out of the 10 years I've been teaching. (FYI double the work for teachers but that's not the point here.) it would never be possible for both classes to do the same work/homework. School should never have indicated this might happen. It just wouldn't work.
There should be a homework policy in the school and this policy would state how much homework each class should get. Maybe the other teacher is giving too much rather than your son's giving too little? It is often the case that older teachers have it easier from parents than younger subs. Parents sometimes don't question the more experienced teacher but the younger one is fair game!
School should also have a policy on splitting classes and no two are the same. Some are alphabetical, some are ability based, some are friends with friends etc. and you can request to see this policy.
As for your son coming home with an attitude....

There is no rule on how many splits. If you are unhappy about split classes, direct your anger at the DES, not the school. As to class being given too little homework, it just shows that teachers can't win re too much/too little.

Split classes are unfortunately here to stay. You asked about the roll book, did the school say that it was done alphabetically ? As far as I am aware all roll books are listed by gender first then by ascending number, all students are given a number when they start school and retain it for their time in the school. But the roll book is fast becoming a thing of the past, as and from the start of this school year if a school has an online system like Aladdin, the roll book is no longer used.
Homework the exact same? Never going to happen. However, I would imagine they give the same spelling lists in English and Irish as well as tables. Their planning, curriculum wise, should be more or less the same as well, same topic in History etc or, they will stagger a topic to make particular resources available to both classes.
Classes can be split every year if necessary.

Child's attitude? That might be a different issue.

In our school they are split by DOB.
As for there being a maximum times they can be split,of course there cant be.
Expecting two different classes to be taught the same is crazy. Different teachers will have different needs in front of them and will teach their class as they deem fit.
Teaching a spilt is tough enough without ridiculous expectations from parents that they have the same homework and be on the same topic at the same time.
Both teachers are professionals, let them do their jobs. If you had any real concerns, fair enough but what you have highlighted is just overbearing imo.
