Hi, I want to research ancient Irish genealogy, do you need some kind of special licence to do this in the various departments that hold the records. Can I go in and look through microfilms etc myself?.

A lot of these records are in the NLI - you need a readers ticket for these: http://www.nli.ie/en/readers-tickets.aspx

Thanks, this might sound a bit naive but will I actually have access to books from the middle ages or just copies?

What exactly is it you want to research?
If you can give some details, we might be able to advise you on the specific sources.

I want to look through records of Gaelic family lines as far back as it is possible, basically any authentic historical accounts of ancient Ireland. I have books and I've been researching online but I want to get information from a more direct source.

So books like the great book of genealogies and the annals are already printed and accessible. I think you need to spend some time with the NLI catalogues to narrow it down.

Most of the time you'll find these in a more legible format referenced in other books. It's actually worth using Google Books to get a target list before you get your hands dirty with manuscripts. Other times they may have been transcribed in Irish Manuscript Commission books or even other publications from Four Courts Press.

These will be a lot easier to get your hands on in the NLI or even a local library in some cases.
