Candidate's market?

I'm currently trying to fill a fairly low level admin/customer service job, it will run until Christmas at least, and has the potential to be extended for at least another year after that. I put all of that in the job spec / info to the agency. Dublin City centre, less than 3 minutes from a Dart station. Flexible hours, full training, friendly people, all that jazz. €11.50 ph which I think is a good rate for the skill / level of experience needed.

After a full week I have one (one!!) CV from the agency and have been told that I should interview them asap as it is a "candidate's market". Has everything suddenly turned around and there are thousands of jobs out there for the people that want them? Or is the recruitment agency being particularly lazy?

I think in Dublin, it is a candidates market, yes. Not so down the country. TBH, at 11.50 an hour, with the cost of living in the capital, I'm not sure many people could afford to work for that level of compensation either.

Interesting, thanks. It seems a very big change from this time last year when we had multiple applicants for similar roles.

Maybe your problem is going the agency route.

Even though the market is up, I don't think it's necessarily a 'candidate's market'. If you advertised the job on the internet you'll probably find loads of applicants looking for a job like that.

TBH I have a feeling that the job isn't a high enough return for the recruitment company. There are plenty of people out there looking for entry level/low skill level jobs. Have you thought about using Intreo's jobs board to advertise for the position.

You've said it's low level - but what skills are you looking for?

it certainly is not a candidates market and hasn't been for about 8 years now, recruitment agencies like the shambles of a government are self serving liars and you only have to take a look at the long thread about agencies on here which will tell you the majority are bad and could not give a flying fu*k about candidates and will fill peoples head full of crap, and god forbid they put you forward for a job and you happen to not be successful, they'll just blank you from there on in.

Sorry for not responding sooner, been offline for a few days.

I think the problem is with the agency I'm using, but unfortunately the company I'm with won't let me open it to another agency or advertise online - it's also being treated as a temp position for now so we have to go through the "approved" agency for payroll purposes.

Apologies for those asking for pm's with the job details, unfortunately I had to make a quick decision based on the 2 CVs in total that the agency sent me, as I'm working alone until I hire someone. I should have logged back in sooner!
