Hi guys, maybe a bit of an unusual one, an acquaintance of my mums has 12 kids, he bought a minibus here for private use, but companies here wont insure it, it is a 2007, 2.5L, 17 seater... She asked me if I had any ideas, and I thought where better to post than here...

    Ask a broker.

Seven seater and a horse box?

Seriously though is it a licence issue? Does he have a bus licence? Might need to be a specialist broker as mentioned above. First Ireland maybe worth a call. Probably would have been worth checking before buying really.

She needs to have D1 or D licence, but that still probably won't be enough.
Insurers is Ireland will probably make it impossible to insure, which is nuts as anywhere else such minibus could be insured without any bother.

You could follow this guys example and see if McCarthys will insure him.

Thing is, if Mum is driving around with her beloved 12 kids and ploughs in to a tree, all 12 are entitled to sue their mother for negligence and any personal injury Too many eggs in one basket, insurance wise

Not sure of the category's, But basically anything between 8 & 16 seats needs a Mini-Bus licence anything with 16+ will need a coach licence.

Contact a few clubs that might use a minibus for their members and just explain .
They might give you their brokers or insurance company s name.
Otherwise start a minibus business and make a few bob on the side if you have the time.
The insurance federation might also be of some help.

For 17 seats and above she will need a coach licence, whereas if she went for a 16 seater the d1 licence would suffice. I assume with the details above though, that it's a lwb transit, which has 17 seats with the driver, but has 16 passengers. In that case the d1 minibus licence would suffice.

Regarding insurance, I know that axa insure minibuses and are usually fairly ok to deal with.
