Is it possible to have a 53/36 crankset? I had a 52/36 last year and I climbed very well with it. Since I upgraded my power on flat has improved but climbing I feel has gone back.

    Any suggestions?

As usual, I'm a bit puzzled.

Why do you want 1 tooth more on the big ring and the same inner 36 if you feel like you're not climbing as well as before.

Do you spin out on a 52?

There are 53 teeth 110 chainrings out there - I am assuming your 36 is 110BCD. I suppose the trick is whether the derailleur can manage 17 teeth instead of 16.

Would a 53 really make that much difference as compared to a 52?

An alternative might be to go with a standard 53/39 but with a slightly bigger range on the cassette? Say a 27/28 instead of a 25/26 at the low end?

Max tooth difference is 16, so the short answer is no, you can't.

You can get a compact chainset (50/34). This will give you lower gears for climbing.

I think it is possible actually, though not advisable. Seems that there is a maximum gap of 16 between the number of teeth on the small and large rings, but I have seen pro set-ups that deviate from that. 36-52 seems the ideal compromise if you want the climbing gears and at the same time have the big gears for sprinting/going very fast downhill. Personally, I'd always go for 50-34 on the basis of wanting the lowest available gear for the days when I'm suffering on the hills. 50-11 is also quite a big gear, good for speeds up to about 55-60kph

I was with someone last week who was riding a 53-36 and he said that he was frequently dropping his chain.

Lots of bikes being sold with "semi-compacts" now: 52-36. Frankly I don't see why anyone needs anything other than a 50-34 or 50-36 (must try this!).

You could just change your cassette.

These a very good reason for rocking a 53-39. See rule 5

i use and have used a 50/38-39 for years.
buy a standard double and swap outside ring..
or buy compact and up inside to 38 max

    lovely ratio.

Nope! A sausage or two never harmed any cyclist.
Sure didnt Eddie Merckx eat heaps of them in his molteni days? And for the record, he won the tour de france on something like a 52/41 crankset so I dunno...
