Commute to work by zipline

What about a series of massive zipline running from the M50 to dublin city centre. With adequate park and ride facilities could these be the answers to traffic chaos?

No. It is potentially a runner and certainly not as out of the box and blue sky as the London Trampolineway. That said I just googled 'commute by zipline' in the belief that it might already be happening and it is regarded as frightening and impractical in those places where it is a necessity.
Also the world's longest zipline is 2.5KM so it might not solve all our problems.

But you know what? They laughed at the bike scheme.

How do you propose avoiding crotch rub?

2.5km sounds like hell on the danglies.

Upper body strapping? Around the shoulders and chest for men. Legs dangle free.

    I'd sign up for it.

how do you effectively zip line down in both directions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,438 ✭✭✭✭endacl

Why not a massive catapult at the Red Cow, firing people into a big net in Stephen's Green. Infrastructure-wise, it'd be cheaper. And not as daft.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭kidneyfan

    Is that doable?
You could steer it with rockets. Sounds quite green especially if the Catapult were pullled back by wind powered electricity. That is an amazing idea.

Before we even think about Zip line, how about some properly resourced and supported Park & Ride around the city, that might mean we don't actually need zip lines.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Parachutes would be better plus it would create jobs for pilots.

By having a tower terminus at each end with a high speed elevator taking people to an elevated position from which to descend, obviously. Jesus you really have to spell things out on this forum sometimes

A speedier version of the urban cablecars in La Paz?
The region's new $234m (£140m) cable car system, which whisks passengers between sleek modern terminals in controlled silence, was given its first public outing this week. When all three lines are running they will be able to transport 18,000 passengers an hour over nearly 11 kilometres

Looks more appealing than the Luas.

there was a plan to run a cable car along the Liffey - mainly as a tourist attraction though, rather than for commuters.

You already have the Luas on the Southside. Stick that catapult at Northern Cross

It's just begging to be sponsored by Red Bull also so that could save a few more quid on costs :pac:

Well this thread is seriously funny, whereas the other one is funnily serious.

I'm not sure, seems to simple to me. Surely a variable height tower system that raises and lowers itself would be better. collapsible ladders and all

I hope your joking here this is absolute nonsense nobody in this country will use a park and ride scheme. Its zip line from the end of my road directly to the city centre or nothing.

Make two new shorter motorway bits - between N4 and N7 on both sides of the existing M50.

An outside bit from Tallaght to NewlandsCross to FontHill and an inner bit from Templogue to RedCow to Palmerstown.

This should make the actual M50 more useful to the "thru-fidders" who want to do the full length of M50, and collectively the new set of roads can be referred as the "three-fiddies".

Why not just make the M50 a double decker!

Why not just make the M50 a double decker!
Why not have double decker buses using the hard shoulders on the M50 as bus lanes during rush hour ?

Big problem with zip lines is that the prevailing wind is from the South West so commuting back would be awkward even with extra towers.

Alternately the keep left rule unless overtaking rule could be enforced. All the people hogging the middle lane would be moved over freeing up lots of capacity.
