    Hi,
looking to get some ideas on a different car, after a forced change (my current car was written off)

I have a mk4 gti and would like something a bit bigger, more mature and more power if possible.

the mazda 6 mps looks great on paper, also the focus st.

I would like to keep engine around 2lt

    I do about 10,000 miles a year.

    I am 35.

    any ideas would be great.

    What's your budget OP?

Mazda 6 MPS is 2.3 litre and Focus ST is 2.5 litre.

The new RS3 fits the bill. €60-70k for the privilege.

    Why restrict yourself to 2.0l?

Engine CC has no direct bearing on tax anymore - unless the OP is looking at stuff older than '08.

I'd imagine he's looking at older than 08.

But me personally as much as a pain in the hole tax is don't think anyone should let a few extra quid tax be a deciding factor in what car you drive.

what is the better spec cars and anything to look out for issue wise?

    what the build quality like?

are they a v5 turbo, tune able ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭Gavman84

The ST3 would be top spec with leather climate control auto lights wipers Bluetooth Zenons etc. although technically Ireland didn't do St 1-3 spec was just a St and add options. Note with the leather too car is only 4 seater. I have what equates to st2 so auto lights and wipers heated screen aircon Bluetooth.
Build quality is grand not as good as vw but not too bad. They are 5 cyclinder turbo make lovely noise. They are easily tuned also loads of parts and tuning companies work on them.
Issues wise alternator and starter can go. Oil diaphragm tend to need replacing some stage and cam seals leak on some. Nothing too bad really tho.

    Any other sleeper saloons ?
    Volvos
Something a little bit uncommon ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭Gavman84

Could look for S40 T5 same engine as ST be more high spec and that. Not too up on other volvos. Could look at bmw saloons like 325i maybe or the likes.

Not too sure on power I think they were about 190 bhp ish in 04 05 ones. 6 cyclinder engine sounds nice too. M sport spec would be sporty version.

What about a Legacy? You may have to buy from Japan but something like this (except manual)
