Distance From Exchange/Cab

    Hi

For the past week or two i've been getting told different stories in regards to Fibre broadband, our line can get fibre says one rep, our line cannot says another.

The distance to my house from the nearest exchange (which is fibre enabled), is under 2km, about 1.6km. I know this by using a site that was linked on this site to measure the dB Up/Down Line Attenuation. If someone could link that site again it would be great.

On the router its showing 26.5dB Down and 16dB Up line attenuation.

I would just like to know is that distance to far to recieve Fibre broadband? Has anyone got a higher dB line attenuation and are able to get Fibre.

    Thanks

    Scob

Attenuation says 2000km loop, not 1600m but its much of a muchness. If you can get eVDSL it woule be SLOWER. Unless there's a cab in between you and that exchange you're SOL and even if they offer, don't take it.

    Thanks for your reply.

U said '2000km loop', I assume that was meant to have been 2000m loop...

When you say eVDSL would be slower I just don't understand why?
I have been told by a Vodafone rep that my line can handle 10mb download on ADSL and only 4mb on VDSL, but he could not explain to me why Fibre would be slower than the normal ADSL line.

The limit for exchange VDSL is 1500m at the moment until vectoring gets enabled to bring it up to 2km the same as VDSL from cabs, KN will not install over this 1500m limit.

I think it is due to the frequencies in use - they are much higher for VDSL than ADSL. This then means that the signal drops off very sharply much closer to the exchange/cab than with ADSL.

ADSL2+ can reach several KM (maybe 6-8 - others please correct me if I'm wrong) and at 2KM (which you are) you get 10Mbps.

VDSL is currently at it's absolute limit at 2KM and you would get the lowest speed available on that (which I think is a 7Mbps profile) but if the rep tells you the max you can get is 4Mbps, then that is it - that is all you will get on that profile.

eVDSL will not reach you at all, as mentioned by mass_debater, it's limit is 1.5KM.

Stick with your ADSL for now.

I just wish I posted here first before I wasted countless phone calls to Eircom. You hear the stories about them and what a complete joke there customer care/tech support team is, but you have to experience it for yourself to truly understand how bad they are.

The information you guys posted was all I needed to know to understand exactly what was going on. I guess it means more waiting for VDSL2 when ever that will be....

    Thanks for your help.

This IS VSDL2. You're waiting for FTTH in fact. 2017 onwards in most cases.

So a cab with max speed of 70mb is VDSL2, is that what you're saying?

I thought the cabs with 'up to' 70mb were VDSL enabled and the cabs with 'up to' 100mb were VDSL2...?

Nah, its all VDSL2, the 30Mb boost is G.Vectoring. Its no miracle worker. At your range VDSL2 will be marginally faster than ADSL2+ at best, but far more sensitive to issues as the line will be at the very end of the sync range.

Ah I see. Well thats disappointing, guess i'll be stuck with 8mb for a long time to come .

Thanks for your help ED E.

I thought would be best to ask this question on this thread instead of creating a new one.

My line is connected to the local exchange (fibre enabled) which is about 2km away, I cannot get fibre broadband. But there is the typical cable cabinet (not fibre enabled) less than 1km away.

Is it possible to be hooked up to this cabinet? Which is a lot closer and would mean that my line would receive a faster speed. Ive read a few posts about people asking for this and was wondering is it possible? and if so what would I have to do?

    Thanks

Copper cabs dont provide services, they just act as a junction box. Lines from there run back to exchange like yours.

Your line should prequal for more than 8Mb though, so check with your providers sales team for a 24Mb package.
