If you have the source material why not.

BTW. Those TVs are not 4k. Their res is UHD.

    4k is 4096 x 2160. UHD is 3840 X 2160.

    Isn't UHD 3840 X 2160 one of the 4k resolutions and they're referring to it as 4K UHD - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4K_resolution#Resolutions

I guess we'll see more of these from Aldi/Lidl with their home country's DTT system switching over to HEVC next year.

    Natively 4K is 4096 x 2160, UHD is lower.

UHD is not 4k. Besides the resolution, the aspect ratio is completely different.

True but like King Canute trying to stop the tide, once marketing see it sells we're stuck with it.

I thought there was still some debate about transmission standards or has that been resolved now? I wouldn't want to get burned again like many I know who got DTT sets just before RTÉNL decided to change to mpeg4.
Also 3000:1 contrast doesn't sound that great to me.

Right now the only 4k TVs that make sense are the ones that support Netflix and Amazon 4k streaming.

60Hz refresh rate? If true then it's not really suitable for European use.

No debate about DTT standards, in Ireland in any case. We've got plenty of spare capacity and no content looking for that capacity.

RTÉNL didn't change our DTT standard to MPEG-4, that was decided by the Dept of Communications and publically announced by them in late Jul 2008, they started the pre-launch engineering transmissions a week later. Its use was a foregone conclusion within the industry long before that and used during the 2 year trial. The problem was the lack of communication to the public and the stock of MPEG-2 TVs on store shelves here. I purchased an early Sony MPEG-4 TV a few months before the announcement.

This from a Media Broadcast (German terrestrial network operator) presentation earlier this year on the transition to DVB-T2/HEVC, note the reference to broadcast 3840 × 2160/50p (4K) UHD TV (16:9 aspect ratio). Explains why German retailer Aldi uses the same terminology on their TVs.

Sure. Part of the problem. Some manufacturers are staying away from labelling them as 4k (because technically they are not) they are just UHD. The only way you will know if its 4k is by checking the resolution as the manufacturers simply cannot be trusted to label these TV's correctly. Bit like HD ready all over again.

You can see the bars that you would have watching the German station on a real 4k TV.

    Then there is 8k........http://www.cablelabs.com/4k-vs-uhdtv-clearing-up-the-confusion/

A recent report commissioned for the German industry association Deutsche TV Plattform indicates sales of UHD TVs has risen from 1% to 7.7% within one year and that 1 in 3 Germans now want to buy a UHD TV.

If Germans want to buy them Aldi is going to oblige at a budget price point it seems and we'll see more of them here in future.

I'd be curious to see some feedback from anyone who bought one.

    This from the ITU
ITU Recommendations on UHDTV standards agreed

The ITU-R Recommendation lays out the quality standards for UHDTV in two steps. The advances made with each of these quality steps are roughly similar to the step from the old ‘standard definition television’ to ‘high definition television (HDTV)’. HDTV pictures today have the equivalent of between 1-2 megapixels. The first level of UHDTV picture levels has the equivalent of about 8 megapixels (3840 x 2160 image system), and the next level comes with the equivalent of about 32 megapixels (7680 x 4320 image system). As a shorthand way of describing them, they are sometimes called the ‘4K’ and ‘8K’ UHDTV systems.

    http://www.itu.int/net/pressoffice/press_releases/2012/31.aspx#.VfiGuf-FPDc

Two resolutions are defined as UHDTV, ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020 defines two resolutions of 3840 × 2160 ("4K") and 7680 × 4320 ("8K"), these resolutions have an aspect ratio of 16:9. (4K 4096 x 2160 is the digital cinema format and won't be used for broadcast)

    - 4K UHDTV (2160p) is 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels tall, which is four times as many pixels as 1920x1080
    - 8K UHDTV (4320p) is 7680 pixels wide by 4320 pixels tall, which is sixteen times as many pixels as current 1080p HDTV

Report ITU-R BT.2246-4 (02/2015) The present state of ultra-high definition television
UHDTV production of big live events has already started, notably the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil where three games hosted in the Epic Maracana Stadium were officially produced and distributed worldwide in 4k UHDTV. The EBU, by means of its operational branch (EUROVISION), ensured the worldwide delivery of the three games over its satellite and fibre network.

It really is a pity that the manufacturers have been allowed use 4K rather than UHD or mix both together.

Either way they have tried to simplify their lies by using 2160p lines as a standard and disregarding the pixel content which does not exceed 4k!

In any event the broadcasters will at least be broadcasting UHD so it will make no odds.

It will also fit in with UHD offerings from Netflix, Amazon, Ultraflix and Youtube 4K.

For the sake of being accused of pedantic I wish they would be a little less economical with the truth and stick to what it is rather than rename one of the DCI standards!
