Hi, Apologies if this has already been covered :o

I'm hoping to take cost neutral early retirement next August. Myself and my partner are thinking about getting married before that. Will my partner be able to claim tax credits for me when I retire? I will be getting approx €45,000 lump sum. My small pension won't kick in until I reach 60 (another 3.5 years) but I do have the opportunity to buy 3 years service so I can have it when I retire.

Are tax credits only given for spouses who are unemployed and not retired?

If your married, your spouse can take on your personal tax credit, and up to 9000 of your Standard Rate Cut Off Point.

So it doesn't matter if I have a small pension?

It would depend on the amount of tax credits you have allocated to you, and the amount of pension
