I know there are a number of threads relating to St Andrews but hopefully mods won't mind another!

So am hoping to make the pilgrimage north next summer and was wondering what boardsies have had the pleasure and if they could advise on a few things. I'm in the process of filling out the advance reservations form (won't be going on a whim), so obviously the dream could be over in a couple of weeks but am hoping for the best and making tentative plans!

I was hoping to find out what course people generally pick as their number 2 after the Old Course. The New course seems to be ranked the best but have heard it's difficult; there'll be 7 or 8 of us going and we'd be a half decent standard (12 handicap the highest) but don't want to be losing rakes of balls if we can help it! I'm leaning towards the Jubilee but would hate to miss out on another course if it's really good.

Looking at maybe squeezing Carnoustie in as well but obviously depends on availability, not to mention price, logistics etc. Hotels, bars and restaurants also to be researched, so all advice gratefully received.
