Circulating pump?

Just leaving a breakdown. Boiler tripping on high limit stat. Circulating pump at boiler is running. Water hot each side of it. Return to boiler still cold when boiler cuts out on its control stat. No motorised valves on system. Cylinder not heating either. Sealed system in 2 storey house wit pressure at 1.5 bar. Water available at bleed on upstairs rads.
Btw the circulating pump is controlled by a stat on hot pipe at the boiler.

Could the pump seem to be running ok and still not doing it's job? Any other ideas?
I advised him to get a plumber, but I am curious.

Yep, pump can be spinning, but just not fast enough.
Had the same problem recently on two potterton boilers.

Yes shaft or impeller could have broken off but pump motor still running. Probably best to swap out the pump to make sure and eliminate it.

Yep can show up after draining and filling too. Just not enough power to drive the air out

Is there any way to be sure? It would be an expensive replacement if it turned out to be something different.

Stick on an old working pump and see if it sorts it first

Well that's one of the benefits of Boards. It gives everybody the opportunity to learn something, including fools who denigrate.

If you are referring to me, I am not a plumber.
