Citizenship... with a twist

    Hi All,

First time posting in this forum but I'm quite unsure what my legal standing is here regarding my issue.
I was born in London to an Irish father and in 95 moved to Ireland. I have a PPS number, I've worked in Ireland, I have an Irish passport etc so by the law I am an Irish citizen due to the fact my father is Irish.
Now, I'm married to a Polish woman and we had our first child born in Poland back in May.
I rang the embassy to have her entered into the books and they are telling me that she is only entitled to Irish citizenship but is not automatically one.
I checked this out and it does indeed seem that way :(
So my question is, how do I go about getting Irish citizenship for my daughter?
I see so many forms that need to be filled out and I'm astonished that they are asking for 175e for the application and if successful they will possibly want 200e to be paid??
It's effing extortion! Am I right that this is the only way for her to be recognised as an Irish citizen? Does that also mean that legally/technically as of now she is only a Polish citizen?
    Thanks for reading :(

I'm not sure who's looking for that much money off you. The fee is €125 + €20 for the certificate.

If you were born in Ireland your child would be automatically an Irish citizen. As you were born outside of Ireland, if your child was born here they would also be automatically an Irish citizen.

Because both you and the child were born outside of Ireland, they have to be registered in the Foreign Births Register. The fees, as stated, are c. €145.

This isn't extortion, this is a reasonable processing fee given that your family do not live in the State and your child was not born here. It requires more administration to establish your child's lineage if both you and they were born abroad. I feel some sympathy for you in that you have lived for a long period in Ireland i.e. it's not like a third generation child whose parents have never been in Ireland, but unfortunately you fall within the same category for processing.

She is legally a Polish citizen with an entitlement to Irish citizenship.

Thanks for that. I was just under the impression that if I'm an Irish citizen then automatically so would she.
From what I see ill need to get my dads Irish birth cert for official proof of descent.
