Currently considering land purchase within special areas of conservation. Before ringing a forester is there a quick way to find if the land is eligible for Afforestation Grant or Native Woodland Scheme? Any forestry maps?

I'd be surprised if such maps were available on the Internet, if that's what you mean. Seems more like an internal Local Authority type issue.

Give the forester a shout - they should have some idea or at least be able to check if there's any restrictions on the land you're looking at.

We planted land within a Special Area of Conservation. Some of the SACs in the midlands are very large. We talked to the forestry service inspector in advance to see what the SAC in question was protecting, and asked (1) what the SAC was setup to protect and (2) whether the SAC would influence what types of trees could be planted, if it was okay to plant in the area. The inspector was very helpful in terms of indicating that an application was likely to be successful given where it was and the types of trees we intended on planting. You can see the full list of SACs in the republic of Ireland with some information background on each on Wikipedia (search for "List of Special Areas of Conservation in the Republic of Ireland").
