Wordpress - Download attachments?

I have an old wordpress site I created on the wordpress.com site. I've since recreated this site and imported the XML (site structure/content) on a new server.

The problem I have is that all of the links and images are pointing to the old site. Is there any easy way to download all of the attachments from the old site? I don't mind re-importing everything again and linking.

You can use the plugin 'search & replace' to change the text of the links. I think if you export (tools/export) the old site it will pull down the attachments (not 100% though). Alternatively can you ftp in and grab them?

The absolute links (http://www.website.com/files/file.zip) need to be relative (../files/file.zip).

Not sure how to go about editing them though, sorry.

That's the problem! As this is a free wordpress site, I can't use plugins or have access to FTP.

yes, but only content (posts, pages and and feedback), not media

This says the export should also export the images

https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-export-images-from-media-library-when-migrating

Other than that, the only thing I can think of is to physically download all the images from the live site.

As the thread on wordpress.com says:
During the import process to the new wordpress blog, you will see a button appear on the import page that will ask if you want to import the images. Click that button and it will import all your images as well.

(I think that the "button" is a checkbox and says to import "attachments")

So, I suggest clearing out the new site and reimporting the WML file and choose to download the attachments.

No, there's no option to include images. On the import page, you only get to choose an XML file.

I usually use this tool for the job
https://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/

Just drop the .php file in your root and open it in your browser. You can find the old root and remove it or replace it with the new root. Just make sure your database is backed up first.

When you say drop it into your root, I assume you would do this using the FTP? As I mentioned I was using free wordpress.com website to host my site, so I don't have any access to the source/root files.

It is the page *after* that one. The XML file is uploaded and read, then it asks you to map the authors listed in the XML file to existing authors on the importing site.

Below that is the checkbox to import attachments. See attached screenshot.

The search/replace script is for use after you have imported the data via the XML file.

Thanks for that! I must have missed that when I originally imported! :-(

I've made so many new updates since then on the site, that it would be too risky for me to re-import the old XML file again.
