How many refugees/migrants should Ireland take in?

I heard Eamon Ryan on Newstalk on Sunday morning last advocating that we allow 40,000 refugees/migrants to come to Ireland.
Is this realistic? It's not so long ago that we were being told that there are already 100,000 Irish people here who are effectively homeless, (and 300,000 who are unemployed).
We seem to have a severe problem coping with a few thousand asylum-seekers who are here already, (in direct provision).
Where and how would this new influx be housed, educated, and provided with health and social services?

an arbitrary fixed number serves little purpose.

If he's got a few billion euro to house them long term and another 100+million in legal fees for them sure why not.

Not many homeless - there are about 1000 people in temporary accommodation in Dublin who don't want to move outside Dublin. No major issues elsewhere and plenty of accommodation in counties away from Dublin.

As for refugees from Syria - Germany will take a huge number. Not from goodness of their heart though. Germany NEEDS them. Population is declining by over 300,000 per year. Average family size is lowest in history. Over 1million homes lie empty, Tens of thousands of jobs are unfilled.

The Syrian people are in the main very well educated with high skillset. Whilst it is a Muslim country, it was very much a la carte and did not play a huge role in their lives. So out of all the Muslim countries, they will fit into the European way of life quite easily and contribute very quickly to whatever country they move to.

And once things return to normal in Syria, many will return.
