Painting stones?

Hey folks, sorry if this is the wrong forum but wasnt sure where else to ask.
Im looking to paint a few stones to leave in a fairy garden. The plan was to paint them different colours, write our names on them and then use a varnish for protection with some glitter sprinkled over them.
The kids picked their stones and i went to an arts shop today and was told to use poster paints. Problem is tho, after the 2nd coat they look shocking. I cant get the brush marks out of them.
Should i just keep coating till they look ok, or start from scratch with a different type of paint or use some sort of primer before the paint?
Thanks for any tips ye might have.

Hi, I use an acrylic paint (you can get one that suitable for outdoors). Poster paint will faint quite quickly, acrylic will hold its colour for longer but will also eventually fade. You can also use a 3D writer like the decopatch ones. Check your outdoor varnish, sometimes it causes yellowing, apply at least 2 coats and use the glitter with the first coat. Happy Painting!!!
