Looking for some help here... trying to replace an old 10 speed cassette with a new one.

The problem I'm having is that the lockring just spins around without engaging the threads. However it tightens properly in place with the 10th ring removed.

    I've put some images here:

    What am I doing wrong?

Your missing a chain whip I'd say

No, he's trying to get it back on.
Can you take a pic of the hub with the casette off and someone might spot something

    Ah, "Read it again!"

    Spacer missing?

You don't really need a chain whip to tighten a lock nut.

Have you installed the spacers correctly? Are the gaps between each of the sprockets the same?

Place both new and old cassette side by side on a table and see if they are the same height.

If the thread is not engaging but does so with one sprocket removed that suggests the cassette is not fully seated. There's not an extra spacer found its way in somewhere?

    Sounds more like it ya.

If any of the individual sprockets are not seated correctly in the splines on the freehub, there will not be enough room for the threads on the lockring to get purchase on the threads on the freehub. Check that each is correctly seated before panicking - worse case scenarios such as stripped threads on the freehub are for later......

Sounds like one of the sprockets isn't sitting properly.

Assuming you have a compatible freehub and cassette it may be that the bottom part of the cassette isn't fully seated on the freehub.

Try a little lube on the freehub maybe?

When you buy a new cassette, they usually come with a spacer.

When you removed the old cassette, did you remove the old spacer? (sometimes if the hub is dirty, the spacer looks like its part of the hub and you could have missed it)

the cogs look slightly unaligned compared with mine? Might be just the gearing. Mine is a 10spd 12-27t

EDIT: Adding another image and I think I'm talking crap re the unalignment.

At the risk of insulting you're intelligence are you sure it was a ten speed cassette that came off the bike ? The only reason that I ask is that I can only see 9 cogs on the old one.

Failing that - are there any additional spacers on the inside of the freehub as it looks like the cassette is sitting correctly on the splines.

Cheers folks, got it thanks to the comments here - it was an extra spacer left from the old cassette at the hub. Spot on there LaPierre, I didn't notice it wasn't part of the hub just like you suggested.

The new cassette is Tiagra 4600, the older was Ultegra 6600, I think the more expensive cassette came with a spacer whereas the Tiagra just has 3 raised dimples on the inside to cause it to raise up.

@GasBrakeHonk no offence taken, believe me I counted the old and new 3 times just to be sure ;)

@yop, there's a chain whip in the very first picture :)
