Cannot enter single user mode

Hey all, yesterday my Macbook Pro started showing the distorted video issue, with horizontal lines across the screen and unable to log into my account or the guest account. It seems a fairly common issue with my model and Apple are actually recalling them (http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/). Despite my model been same as mentioned above, seems like I'm not covered by the new extension :(

Anyway, there is a temporary fix that will allow me into my desktop to back stuff up, but it requires me entering single user mode. Any time I attempt to enter it (command + s), I briefly see a blue screen appear with text on it and then it returns to the normal login screen. It flashes so briefly I can't read what it is saying. Any ideas as to how I can get into single user mode? I also cannot get into verbose mode either, in case these are related.

is it the 2011 15" MBP? or a different model? where did you buy it? I ask because you may be covered by consumer law still if bought in the EU. CMD + S should enter Single user mode. if you have access to another mac you could try target disk mode (T on Startup) to turn your mac into a hard drive.

Hey, yeah it is the 2011 15" MBP. I took it into an Apple Reseller and they ran a test on it and said it's covered by the Apple extension so it's been repaired now free of charge. Seems like it's just the graphics card and logic board, so hopefully my data will not get wiped.

It seemed like it was trying to enter it but just couldn't and the blue screen flashed too quickly to read. Looking online, the current issue with my mac should not be preventing it from entering it, so I'll check again when I get it back repaired.

CompuB in Dublin. Dropped it in at lunch on Tuesday. They rang a few hours later to confirm what the problem was and ran the diagnostic test. They rang back a few minutes later to confirm it was the known issue and that Apple would cover it. They expect it to be fixed on Friday if the parts arrive on time, so they are pretty quick!

    did u get sorted?

I got the laptop back on the friday, working great again and there was no charge as expected. Haven't had a chance to check single user mode yet as I left for holidays soon after collecting it.

Have to say very impressed with Apple customer care and CompuB, very efficient and pain free service.
