Need advice with regards to VRT

    Hi all

    So, long story short.

    1. I was planning on moving home to the UK so I purchased a car from Belfast with an NI Reg. I was going to drive it back the UK and use it over there.

    2. My plans have now changed and I will be staying in Ireland.

    3. I looked online about how to pay the VRT so I can use the car here and it states I need an invoice showing when I purchased the car - I have none, it was a cash sale through a private seller - will the log book be sufficient to show when it was bought?

    4. It also states I need proof of when I 'shipped' the car into Ireland - again, I have none - I just drove it down the M1 back to Meath! So how do I prove this?

    5. It's worth noting that I filled out my parents English address on the log book when I bought it as that's where I was supposed to be living so they will receive that in the post soon - they can send it over to me.

So I now have a car, sitting on my driveway in Ireland (not being used) which is registered to an address in London and I don't know what I can do with it?
I'd be willing to sell it if it was easier but ideally I'd pay the VRT and keep it as it's a lovely car.

    Thanks for any replies

Google for motorcoach VRT calculator and it will give you an idea of what the VRT cost will be.

Other than that I think it's a matter of booking an app at your nearest nct centre and they will give you definite figure.

Thank you for that, I will look at that eventually but right now I'm not looking for a price, my queries are:

Most people do up a receipt themselves and Revenue accept it without issue. It's a stupid tick the box exercise really.

I'd imagine if car is registered in your name in UK, you won't need a invoice or receipt.

Proof of shipping - no need for it, if you are VRTing it within a month from purchase and date of purchase will be on V5C

I generally think, you should be fine without either invoice (receipt) and proof of shipping.

If you already own the car in the UK where you lived then a purchase receipt should not be needed. A receipt is only asked for if an Irish resident is importing a car into Ireland that they recently purchased.

Well that is kind of what I'm doing but I suppose it won't look that way as the log book will show a London address - even though the car has never been to London! :D

    Thanks for the reply.
